It is located right beneath the forehead. It is in the anterior (front) region of the frontal lobes.<\/p>\n<p>In the past five million years of human evolution, the size of the prefrontal cortex has increased six-fold, as compared to the brain itself, which has only increased in size about three-fold.<\/p>\n<p>When I first read about the prefrontal cortex and realized that it was responsible for the following functions, I said, \u201cHoly Guacamole! The prefrontal cortex is in charge of my permanent weight loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The prefrontal cortex\u2019s responsibilities include<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 playing umpire to your conflicting thoughts<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 decision-making &#8212; between right and wrong<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 as well as good and bad<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 predicting future events<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 inhibiting emotional urges<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 inhibiting thoughts<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 putting on the brakes<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 conscious thinking<\/p>\n<p>Pretty interesting, yes? And I\u2019m betting each and every one of you can hear our inner umpire resolving our conflicting thoughts??? Or caving in?<\/p>\n<p>It is the prefrontal cortex that determines if we are in control or not, and the prefrontal cortex is \u201cenergy hungry.\u201d In other words, making decisions, putting the brakes on, inhibiting emotions takes energy \u2013 vast sums of energy. And \u2026 we have limited amounts of energy.<\/p>\n<p>It takes far less energy to be on autopilot \u2013 far less energy to remain unconscious. It takes copious amounts of energy to be conscious and put our prefrontal cortex to &#8220;good&#8221; use.<\/p>\n<p>Every time we say \u201cno, thank you\u201d to one of our red light foods, we use energy.\u00a0\u00a0 The more difficult we make this journey, the more energy we use.\u00a0\u00a0 The more energy we use, the more likely we are to make less than great choices; the more likely we are to turn to food when our emotions get the best of us; the more energy we use, the more likely we are to move into \u2018unconscious\u2019 behavior.<\/p>\n<p><em>What to do?<\/em> How can you make this journey easy (relatively easy)?\u00a0 The more structure you can add to your plan the less conscious energy you\u2019ll need.\u00a0\u00a0 <em>The first thing, and the most important thing you can do TODAY &#8211; to make this journey easy (or easier) &#8230; IS TO \u2026 clean out your cabinets!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Is your HOME in alignment with your goals?<\/em> How many times have you heard me say this?
