\nYou are asked to stand and bow your head,
\nconsider the harm you’ve caused,
\nthe respect you’ve withheld,
\nthe anger misspent, the fear spread,
\nthe earnestness displayed
\nin the service of prestige and sensibility,
\nall the callous, cruel, stubborn, joyless sins
\nin your alphabet of woe
\nso that you might be forgiven.
\nYou are asked to believe in the spark
\nof your divinity, in the purity
\nof the words of your mouth
\nand the memories of your heart.
\nYou are asked for this one day and one night
\nto starve your body so your soul can feast
\non faith and adoration.
\nYou are asked to forgive the past
\nand remember the dead, to gaze
\nacross the desert in your heart
\ntoward Jerusalem.
\nTo separate the sacred from the profane
\nand be as numerous as the sands
\nand the stars of heaven.
\nTo believe that no matter what
\nyou have done to yourself and others
\nmorning will come and the mountain
\nof night will fade.
\nTo believe, for these few precious moments,
\nin the utter sweetness of your life.
\nYou are asked to bow your head
\nand remain standing,
\nand say Amen.
