{"id":5423,"date":"2014-01-15T09:56:48","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T14:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/ourladyofweightloss\/?p=5423"},"modified":"2014-01-15T09:56:48","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T14:56:48","slug":"chewing-the-fat-depressed-and-defeated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/ourladyofweightloss\/2014\/01\/chewing-the-fat-depressed-and-defeated.html","title":{"rendered":"Chewing the Fat: Depressed and Defeated?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4125\" alt=\"CURE\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/100\/2012\/09\/CURE-279x300.jpg\" width=\"279\" height=\"300\" \/>Dear Our Lady of Weight Loss,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 I just turned 60.\u00a0 After ten years of lifting weights and lots of walking, I let myself \u201cgo,\u201d as in I am out of shape.\u00a0 And, sadly, the weight that I worked so hard to remove is finding its way back.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to get back into the exercise routine that I established ten years ago, but my body parts get &#8220;hurt,&#8221; and then I am grounded for a week.<\/p>\n<p>Is there a book, an article, something\u2014anything, that can help me to start an exercise program again?\u00a0 A program that will not hurt the 60 year old, out of shape me, who so desperately wants to get back in shape?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s depressing, you know, to have once had \u201cit\u201d but now lost it.\u00a0 I want to be stronger again; I want to do harder hikes, longer hikes here in Arizona.\u00a0 Just doing a 30 minute walk feels wimpy.<\/p>\n<p>I need some encouragement.\u00a0 Thanks!\u00a0 <em><strong>~ Sadly Hurting, M. from AZ<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0***<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dear Sadly Hurting<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0 I feel your pain, both physical and emotional. And I applaud your wanting to get back into shape, your \u201cI can\u201d attitude.\u00a0 It\u2019s clear that you are not going to quit, you are not throwing in the towel, you are determined and you will find your way back to a healthier you. Good for you!!!<\/p>\n<p>My advice is simple:<\/p>\n<p><b>Meet yourself where you are<\/b>.\u00a0 Not where you were; not where you want to be.\u00a0 Meet yourself where you are in your life right now.\u00a0 Let go of the past; don\u2019t worry about the future.<\/p>\n<p><b>Stretch.<\/b>\u00a0 There are a number of books that illustrate chair yoga and simple stretching techniques.\u00a0 While stretching, let your body know how much you appreciate her; practice gratitude with every stretch.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be consistent.<\/b>\u00a0 Whether you walk for 10 minutes without pain or more or less, just do that.\u00a0 Every day.\u00a0 And maybe in a week or two or three, when you are truly ready, increase your walk by a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Trekking Pole.<\/b>\u00a0 I am familiar with the wonderful Arizona hiking trails, from easy to moderate to difficult, and I find that using one of those hiking poles, trekking poles, walking sticks (call it what you will) is helpful.\u00a0 Have you tried one?<\/p>\n<p><b>Stay Hydrated.<\/b>\u00a0 You might be surprised (but maybe not as you live in Arizona, so you know how important water is) that staying seriously hydrated helps.\u00a0 Are you packing water<\/p>\n<p><b>Rest.<\/b>\u00a0 Check in with your body and need be, sit down on a rock and rest.<\/p>\n<p><b>Get out of your head; enjoy nature!<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0 Stop listening to your thoughts.\u00a0 They&#8217;re not real.\u00a0 They come and go with the clouds.\u00a0 Focus on the beauty of your walk; pay attention to nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And once again, meet yourself where you are,<\/strong> not where you were, not where you want to be.\u00a0 Where you are now is the perfect place to continue your journey!<\/p>\n<p>I hope that helps!\u00a0 Please keep us in your loop.<\/p>\n<p>And Tushakteers, if you want to add your wellness wisdom to this post, please do!
