{"id":5304,"date":"2013-11-26T12:12:16","date_gmt":"2013-11-26T17:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/ourladyofweightloss\/?p=5304"},"modified":"2013-11-26T12:27:48","modified_gmt":"2013-11-26T17:27:48","slug":"kick-in-the-tush-tuesday-7-solid-strong-smart-thanksgiving-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/ourladyofweightloss\/2013\/11\/kick-in-the-tush-tuesday-7-solid-strong-smart-thanksgiving-tips.html","title":{"rendered":"Kick in the Tush Tuesday:  7 Solid, Strong, Smart Thanksgiving Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><i><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4671\" alt=\"kick in the tush club 1:2 logo\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/100\/2013\/03\/kick-in-the-tush-club-12-logo1-300x178.jpg\" width=\"404\" height=\"240\" \/>Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Chanukah, Tushkateers!!!\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><span>Did you know that the convergence of Thanksgiving and the first day of Chanukah <i>(Festival of Lights)<\/i> is something that rarely happens.\u00a0 So rare, in fact, that it is beyond a &#8216;once in a lifetime&#8217; happening; it is a once in a many-lifetime event!\u00a0 And it&#8217;s happening this Thursday, and it won&#8217;t again for almost another 78,000 years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><span>That&#8217;s right, Tushkateers, please note that this is the <i><b>only time in our liftime <\/b><\/i>that we will have the opportunity to eat <i><b>sweet potato casseroles and potato pancakes a.k.a. latkes<\/b><\/i> in unison! \u00a0 And, w<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><span>hile I am wildly enthusiastic about this happening and enjoy them both equally, I realized that I best review some strategies for the holiday and set my intention as to whether I want to gain a pound, lose a pound or maintain!\u00a0 You too, yes?\u00a0 Okay, then&#8230;let&#8217;s set our intention and review the following <\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\">seven (7) good, solid, strong tips that can get you through the day feeling sated, happy, and light!\u00a0 Read, read again, and again, please.\u00a0 Repetition helps!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><b>\u00a0FOLLOW the NO SEAT \/ NO EAT RULE<\/b> .<br \/>\nDignity first. No eating as you walk from room to room, or while cooking (need be use duct tape over the mouth), or over the sink, or off other people\u2019s plates as you\u2019re cleaning up. Eat only when sitting down. For those are going to a buffet \u2013 great! Makes it that much more of a challenge.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><b>SLOW DOWN and SAVOR the FLAVOR<\/b>.<br \/>\nResearch shows that those who slow down while eating eat less than those who gulp and stuff. In a recent study conducted by the University of Rhode Island, scientists found that when eating quickly women consumed 646 calories in approximately nine minutes. When they ate slowly, they averaged 579 calories in 29 minutes. Get it? They ate 67 calories more in nine minutes than they did in 29 minutes! In addition, those who slowed down enjoyed their meals and felt more satisfied on multiple levels.<\/span><\/span><\/span>Thanksgiving dinner lasts a long time. I can guarantee that if you eat with awareness, slow down and savor the flavor, you will eat less.<\/li>\n<li><span><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><b>WEAR FORM-FITTING CLOTHES<\/b>.<br \/>\nDo not leave any room for growth! Plain and simple.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><b>EAT ONLY WHAT YOU LOVE<\/b>.<br \/>\nThanksgiving tables are generally overflowing with traditional family favorites. Before you fill your plate, survey the table and decide what you&#8217;re going to choose. Then select reasonably-sized portions of foods you cannot live without.<\/span><\/span><\/span>When in doubt, ask yourself, \u201cOn a scale of 1-10, 10 being if I don\u2019t eat it, I will feel sad and deprived for hours and hours, how much do I love thee, pumpkin pie?\u201d If the answer is 2, opt for something that\u2019s closer to the 10! No point in wasting good calories.<\/li>\n<li><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><b>EAT BREAKFAST<\/b>.<br \/>\nI know that it\u2019s counter-intuitive. You\u2019d think that it would be a smart idea to save up all your calories for the one big meal. But no! Experts say that one small meal in the morning can give you control over your appetite. Start the day with an egg and toast.\u00a0 Maybe a whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk. Something so that you won\u2019t be <\/span><\/span>ridiculously<span><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"> hungry when you arrive at the big meal.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><b>KEEP YOUR HANDS (and MIND) BUSY<\/b>.<br \/>\nBring your camera and spend time snapping away, being your family\u2019s historian. Knit. Toss a jig-saw puzzle on a corner table and get busy. Anything that you can do that will take your thoughts away from the food is a good idea.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\"><b>VISUALIZE the END of the DAY BEFORE YOU START YOUR DAY<\/b>.<br \/>\nImagine, right now, that it is tonight. The Thanksgiving celebration is over. You are pleased, proud and relieved. Yes, you made it through the day. You practiced moderation. You enjoyed what you ate. You enjoyed the company. You are centered, calm, and smiling. And you didn\u2019t end the day one pound heavier. Ahhhhh &#8230; &#8220;Into the LITE!&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif\">REMEMBER! One day doth not a fat person make.
