\"jigzoneJust yesterday, when I took a much-needed break from working hard on my latest art masterpiece, a self-portrait soon to be unveiled, entitled: Miss Frozen Peas, 2013<\/i>,<\/b><\/i> I encountered a young man playing the Sitar.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sitar-Player had seated himself at a bistro table in front of the local food co-op.\u00a0 His sitar was gorgeous (wow, what an instrument);<\/i> his playing heavenly.<\/p>\n

As he began his second piece, a young woman who worked in the co-op ventured out and said to him, as sweetly as can be, \u201cYou can play here, but you cannot sit here.\u00a0 It\u2019s for the coop customers.\u201d\u00a0 About face, she walked away.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sitar-Player turned to me and said, \u201cJust like them to turn down a gift.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 I\u2019m out of here.”<\/p>\n

I replied, \u201cWell, she does have a point.\u00a0 And this is a good spot, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Lots of foot traffic, people in and out of the co-op, ample opportunities for people to drop dollar bills in your sitar case, no?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you buy yourself one of those little folding chairs.\u00a0 You can have your cake and eat it too; you can sit on it, stay here, share your heavenly music, collect dollar bills; maybe even five dollar bills.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued to express his displeasure about this situation and life-in-general.\u00a0 A defeatist, if ever I met one.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t help myself.\u00a0 I offered some free coaching<\/a> advice\u2014food for thought.\u00a0 I said, \u201cThis is a minor obstacle.\u00a0 Truly.\u00a0 If you give up this easily on the small stuff, how do you handle the major obstacles?\u201d<\/p>\n

I dropped a dollar bill in his case and went my merry way, walking the 0.3 miles back to my studio.<\/p>\n

As I walked, I thought:\u00a0 Maybe Mr. Sitar-Player was The Angel of Defeatism, and I might learn from him (negative role models are the best).\u00a0 <\/em>The next time I feel frustrated and want to toss my art,\u00a0Miss Frozen Peas, 2013,<\/em> into the trash, I will find a better way!<\/p>\n

Lessons Learned:<\/strong>
\nDon\u2019t Give Up.
\nNegative Role Models Rock.<\/p>\n
