{"id":3885,"date":"2012-07-17T12:59:02","date_gmt":"2012-07-17T16:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/ourladyofweightloss\/?p=3885"},"modified":"2012-07-17T12:59:02","modified_gmt":"2012-07-17T16:59:02","slug":"foodborne-illness-survivors-tell-president-obama-we-cant-wait","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/ourladyofweightloss\/2012\/07\/foodborne-illness-survivors-tell-president-obama-we-cant-wait.html","title":{"rendered":"Foodborne Illness Survivors Tell President Obama, We Can\u2019t Wait"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning a coalition of food safety advocates, medical experts and foodborne illness victims held a telebriefing to discuss the critical need for full implementation and funding of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). \u00a0\u00a0 I participated in same and this is what I learned.<\/p>\n<p>Please take a minute to read through these important points and take action!\u00a0 Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.MakeOurFoodSafe.org\/\">www.MakeOurFoodSafe.org<\/a> to take action; give President Obama a Kick in the Tush.\u00a0 Ask him to <strong>make our food safe!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The problem:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodborneburden\/\">the CDC<\/a>, 48,000,000 Americans contract a foodborne illness each year \u2013 that\u2019s one in six of us<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.makeourfoodsafe.org\/tools\/assets\/files\/Children-and-FBI-Factsheet-11-09-2.pdf\">Children account for about half of these<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Overall, foodborne illnesses result in 128,000 hospitalizations \u2026<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 and 3,000 deaths \u2026<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 costing our healthcare system $70 billion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The solution (almost):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Congress passed and President Obama signed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act on January 4, 2011<\/li>\n<li>This was the first major overhaul to our food system in 70 years, and it had the support of the food industry, consumer advocates and the medical and health communities\u2014not to mention bipartisan support in Congress<\/li>\n<li>But 18 months later, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewhealth.org\/reports-analysis\/issue-briefs\/obama-needs-to-release-draft-food-safety-rules-say-victims-and-advocacy-groups-85899404766\">the Obama Administration hasn\u2019t yet implemented<\/a> the major pieces of the bill that would improve the safety of:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Fruits and vegetables<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Packaged foods<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Imported foods<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Since President Obama signed the bill, the CDC reported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewhealth.org\/reports-analysis\/data-visualizations\/a-look-into-multistate-foodborne-outbreaks-85899402947\">10 multistate outbreaks of foodborne illness<\/a> that the bill is designed to prevent and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewhealth.org\/reports-analysis\/issue-briefs\/food-products-recalled-by-fda-85899405368\">at least 149 FDA-regulated foods<\/a> have been recalled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What can you do?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.MakeOurFoodSafe.org\/\">www.MakeOurFoodSafe.org<\/a> to take action; give President Obama a Kick in the Tush.\u00a0 Ask him to <strong>make our food safe!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thank you!!!<\/p>\n<p><em>Spread the word \u2026 not the icing!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Janice<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Life &amp; Wellness Coach<br \/>\nSelf-Help \/ Weight Loss Artist<br \/>\nwise * fun * utterly useful<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollyhock.ca\/CMS\/feed-your-soul.html\"><br \/>\nFEED YOUR SOUL: Change Your WEIGHT!!!
