Why can\u2019t I do that?\u00a0 <em>~ Molly M.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dear Molly,<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 Good question, Molly?\u00a0 Why can\u2019t you?\u00a0 Before we get to the \u2018you\u2019 in this weight loss equation, let\u2019s talk about your friend\u2019s friend\u2019s friend, which I believe is 4 degrees of separation!<\/p>\n<p>Since we don\u2019t have first hand information, and do not know what she is eating specifically, what eating healthfully looks like to her, nor what she considers a half portion, it\u2019s hard to say what she is doing that you can\u2019t do.<\/p>\n<p>What we do know is that weight loss is simple!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Very simple!\u00a0 I didn\u2019t say it was easy; just simple.\u00a0 If you eat healthfully (real food; not processed food nor junk foods), and you eat only when hungry and stop when no longer hungry, then the likelihood of your losing weight is great.<\/p>\n<p>One of the challenges here is that people don\u2019t know what that feels like \u2013 to eat until no longer hungry.\u00a0\u00a0 Generally, people go way beyond that point, past full, straight into stuffed.<\/p>\n<p>While leading my \u201cOur Lady of Weight Loss\u201d workshop at Omega Institute of Holistic Studies, I asked the group, \u201cHow do you know when it is time to stop eating?\u00a0 When do you put down the fork and move away from the table?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here follow some of the answers:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my upper lip is numb, I know it is time to stop eating ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my plate is empty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I can\u2019t breathe any more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I feel sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I\u2019m out of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen other people are done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my anxiety decreases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the bag is empty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the Biggest Loser is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the Biggest Loser is over?\u201d\u00a0 I wanted to make sure that I\u2019d heard this correctly.\u00a0 A resounding \u201cyes\u201d from the crowd. One after the other these workshop participants boldly and courageously stepped forward and confessed that it is their ritual to gather the snacks and sodas before their beloved show airs, eat their way through the show, and when it is over, yes \u2013 that is their signal to stop eating. When The Biggest Loser is over they are \u201csated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not surprised that we as an obese nation are more influenced by the environment, by external cues than whether we are actually hungry.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the signals from our society tell us to eat and eat some more.
