We, here, on my block and in my neck of the woods were lucky.\u00a0 Hurricane Irene came and went quietly.\u00a0 No physical hurricane damage to speak of.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, it was nerve-wracking.\u00a0 My 95 year-young mother lives on Long Island, in Long Beach to be exact.\u00a0 My husband and I rented a car (we are city-dwellers and don’t have one – imagine that!) and dashed out to gather her and a handful of belongings.<\/p>\n
