Yet it is just another way of creating distractions for ourselves.\u00a0 Doing so many things at once makes it difficult to focus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental Clutter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the mind is filled with distracting thoughts, we feel overwhelmed;<\/p>\n<p>don&#8217;t we? This is &#8216;mental clutter.&#8217; Slowing down and focusing on the task<\/p>\n<p>at hand, be it chopping carrots, being fully present and listening to another<\/p>\n<p>person talk, or writing the great American novel, is a key component to<\/p>\n<p>putting our lives in order.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When we move too fast, a few things happen. First, we block our ability<\/p>\n<p>for new information to enter and be processed. In other words, we block<\/p>\n<p>our ability to learn. Secondly, we miss the nuances, the beauty and the<\/p>\n<p>platters full of &#8216;transformational moments&#8217; that life is offering to us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Imagine, if you will, that you are racing through a garden. Zoom, zoom.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty flowers, sunny day &#8230; yeah, yeah, but what about my laundry list of<\/p>\n<p>things I need to do. And there you have it &#8211; you missed the nuances of<\/p>\n<p>nature. You missed an opportunity to take in a deep breath and connect<\/p>\n<p>with your soul. You missed an opportunity to feed your soul.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you slow down and &#8216;<strong>give&#8217; attention <\/strong><em>(more generous and loving than<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>paying attention, don&#8217;t you think?) <\/em>to one thing at a time, you will not only<\/p>\n<p>calm down but the tsunami of thoughts that are crashing through and<\/p>\n<p>washing over brain will settle down to a slow ripple.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The less distracted we are <em>(a.k.a. more present),<\/em> the happier we become,<\/p>\n<p>the wiser we become.
