{"id":2399,"date":"2011-05-17T18:32:43","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T22:32:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/ourladyofweightloss\/?p=2399"},"modified":"2011-05-17T18:32:43","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T22:32:43","slug":"stay-fat-tuesday-keep-shoulding-on-yourself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/ourladyofweightloss\/2011\/05\/stay-fat-tuesday-keep-shoulding-on-yourself.html","title":{"rendered":"Stay Fat Tuesday &#8211; Keep Should&#8217;ing On Yourself"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>How Can I Lose Weight???!!?<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nI received an email from a reader inquiring, \u201cCan you give me some pointers on weight loss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To which I replied, \u201cmight you please be more specific?\u201d  After all, I  could write volumes on the topic, from top to bottom and bottom to top,  which I have (two fabulous books thus far, in fact, chock a block with  vital, useful and fun \u2013 yes FUN \u2013 weight loss information!).<\/p>\n<p>More information poured forth from said reader, \u201cWhat  <strong>SHOULD<\/strong> a person do to lose weight? \u2026 One who has high blood pressure and diabetes?  I know that I <strong>SHOULD<\/strong> eat less and exercise more.  But <strong>I CAN\u2019T<\/strong> seem to make myself do all that.  I might not be <strong>TRYING<\/strong> hard enough.  What <strong>SHOULD<\/strong> I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My philosophy about weight loss is that the food plan is a part of the  equation, because  one can NOT lose food without a solid, healthy food  plan, BUT it is only a part of the equation!  What carries you forward  into your compelling future, what keeps you motivated, what turns weight  loss into permanent fat removal <em>(ahhhh, chew on that for a moment before you move on)<\/em> is your mind-set, your belief systems, which start with the words that we use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STOP TRYING!!!<\/strong><br \/>\nAs Yoda from star wars says, \u201cDo or do not \u2026 there is no try.\u201d Every  time you say that you are \u2018trying\u2019 to do something, you are essentially  making certain that you have a way out. There\u2019s no commitment in  \u2018trying.\u2019 How many times have you said, \u201cI\u2019ll try to make it to your  party.\u201d -or- \u201cI\u2019ll try to stop by.\u201d Did you?  So, please.  just DO.  DO  eat healthy, DO move and shake thy booty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STOP SHOULD&#8217;ING ON YOURSELF!!<\/strong><br \/>\nNobody likes to hear \u201cYou SHOULD\u201d \u2026\u201dYou MUST\u201d \u2026 \u201cYou HAVE to.\u201d  And yet \u2026  we are constantly telling ourselves what to do. These words imply  obligation. You agree that you \u2018should,\u2019 but you don\u2019t \u2018want to.\u2019  So,  if you do what you \u2018should do,\u2019 resentment bubbles up, and if you don\u2019t  do what you \u2018should\u2019 do, you feel guilty, bad, feelings of failure  surface.  Work on your want powermuscle; move toward  \u2018want\u2019 and away from \u2018should!\u2019  Let go of the should, the guilt, the  negative thoughts and move toward being excited that you are creating a  new and wonderful life.  What do you WANT to do?<\/p>\n<p><strong>YES, YOU CAN<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you tell yourself that you can NOT do something; then you cannot.  If  you tell yourself that YOU CAN, then you can.  Start by acknowledging  your thought and begin to turn it around by saying, \u201cIt\u2019s not that I  can\u2019t; it\u2019s that I just don\u2019t know how.\u201d  Yes, you can lose weight, and  yes you can figure out how.
