{"id":2290,"date":"2011-04-21T12:18:13","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T16:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/ourladyofweightloss\/?p=2290"},"modified":"2011-04-21T12:18:13","modified_gmt":"2011-04-21T16:18:13","slug":"passover-the-matzo-brie-calorie-wars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/ourladyofweightloss\/2011\/04\/passover-the-matzo-brie-calorie-wars.html","title":{"rendered":"Passover: The Matzo Brie Calorie Wars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Passover week and Our Lady of Weight Loss admittedly is a Matzo Brie freak!\u00a0 Seriously!\u00a0 She will whip up a batch for anyone visiting, at any time.\u00a0 She makes the cold water and hot water varieties.\u00a0 If you look at the ingredients of Matzo Brie (see below), it is evident that it is a &#8216;clean&#8217; food, easy to make and essentially low in calorie, thus Our Lady of Weight Loss approved!!!<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, Our Lady of Weight Loss knows that most people eat way more than one serving!\u00a0 Case in point, just this morning one of my star clients (you are all stars) confessed that she&#8217;d whipped up a batch of Matzo Brie and eaten it all!!!\u00a0 A quick calculation showed that her breakfast weighed-in at 888 calories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a serving size of Matzo Brie???<br \/>\n<\/strong>Our Lady of Weight Loss&#8217;s Matzo Brie recipe (see below) is 4 servings; not one.\u00a0 Each serving is approximately 250 calories.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of my Weight Loss Success Rules is to know what I eat before I eat it!!!\u00a0 I invite you to make this one of your Weight Loss Success Rules!\u00a0 And now &#8230; read on, cook on, eat on &#8230; enjoy!<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cold Water or Hot Water?<\/strong> There are two matzo brie  camps; those who fervertly believe that soaking the matzo in cold water  before frying is the only way to go, and those who follow the hot water  recipes. Either way, matzo brie (much like french toast) is delicious!<br \/>\nHere follow <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourladyofweightloss.com\/\">Our Lady of Weight Loss\u2019s<\/a> two favorite matzo brie recipes.   I asked her, \u201ccold water or hot  water, which is your fav?\u201d But, she refused to take sides.  She  instructed me to fry up both and make up my own mind!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><br \/>\n4 matzo crackers<br \/>\n4 large eggs<br \/>\nsalt to taste<br \/>\n2 tbsp butter<\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions<\/strong><br \/>\nSoak matzos in cold water for 2 minutes. Drain and crumble. (some people prefer big chunks to small chunks; your choice!)<br \/>\nBeat eggs and salt together in bowl. Add matzo; mix till well-coated.  Heat butter in skillet and pour in matzo mix. Fry till browned on both  sides. Serve warm!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><br \/>\n4 matzoth<br \/>\nBoiling water<br \/>\n4 eggs<br \/>\nsalt n\u2019 pepper to taste<br \/>\na dash of honey<br \/>\n2 tablespoons butter<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instructions<\/strong><br \/>\nBreak the matzoth into nice sized chunks (at least 2 inch pieces) and  place in a colander. Pour the boiling water over them.  Drain, lest your  matzo is soggy and no one wants soggy matzo!<br \/>\nBeat the eggs well, adding salt and pepper; then add the matzoth.<br \/>\nHeat a large frying pan and add fat for frying. Add the egg mixture and  cook over low heat till golden brown on one side, then turn carefully  and brown on the other side. Serve on a hot platter as a large  family-size pancake.
