Let\u2019s be honest.<\/p>\n

Life is good, bad, fun, terrible, beautiful and painful.<\/p>\n

Filmmaker Patrick Solomon<\/a> reports he \u201cstruggled with hardship, suffered defeats\u2026and tried to make sense of [his] world.\u201d Seeing life through the lens of Joseph Campbell\u2019s \u201chero\u2019s journey\u201d strengthened Patrick; so much so, he decided to bring the hero\u2019s journey to life on the big screen.<\/p>\n

Patrick\u2019s film, Finding Joe<\/i><\/a>, depicts every man and woman\u2019s life journey\u2014facing and fighting dragons, walking through open doors and returning to our community with our tale of triumph. The film is based on the narrative Joseph Campbell observed in myths across cultures from ancient history to now.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The key is to \u201cFollow your bliss,\u201d taught Campbell.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what if I\u2019m stuck?\u201d you may ask. \u201cWhat if my dragons keep springing back to life? What if there is no open door? How do I find my bliss then?\u201d<\/p>\n

The heroes in Finding Joe<\/i><\/a> share from their experience:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. You must stop listening to voices outside of yourself. Your culture, for example. Mass media conspires to keep us \u201ctranced-out consumers\u201d and \u201csheep.\u201d External voices can also include the words of those you hold dear. \u201cDon\u2019t do what Daddy says,\u201d Joseph Campbell told his students at Sarah Lawrence.<\/p>\n

2. Identify the earplugs you use to drown out your own voice. One storyteller reports that his journey included fighting the dragon of obesity. He realized his fat kept him from feeling pain from childhood abuse. This realization was the first step to slaying his dragon.<\/p>\n

3. Fear masks what we love. Stretch yourself. Do the things that scare you.<\/p>\n

4. Following your bliss means you turn up the volume in your own heart: what do you love doing? If you had money and time, how would you express yourself?<\/p>\n

5. The most powerful thing you can do is love and accept yourself as you are. Self-acceptance \u201clines you up with the universe.\u201d Doors will open.<\/p>\n

The best part is bringing back the story of how<\/i> you did it. <\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t give up.<\/p>\n
