{"id":897,"date":"2009-11-01T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-01T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/11\/mindfulness-and-the-brain.html"},"modified":"2009-11-01T10:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-01T10:00:00","slug":"mindfulness-and-the-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/onecity\/2009\/11\/mindfulness-and-the-brain.html","title":{"rendered":"Mindfulness and the Brain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>by Evelyn Cash<\/i><\/p>\n<p>For those of us who can&#8217;t get enough articles detailing the science<br \/>\nbehind mindfulness and how it affects the brain, here is a recent<br \/>\narticle from <a title=\"Psychology Today: The Neuroscience of Mindfulness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/your-brain-work\/200910\/the-neuroscience-mindfulness\" id=\"f5zz\">Psychology Today: The Neuroscience of Mindfulness<\/a>.&nbsp;<br \/>\nI know I personally love to read third-party, non-Buddhist, scientific<br \/>\nrationales for why mindfulness and meditation work.&nbsp; I like being able<br \/>\nto point to non-religious sources for why meditation works when people<br \/>\nask me why I chose Buddhism or why I meditate.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The article, by <a title=\"David Rock\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/bloggers\/david-rock\" id=\"hrb2\">David Rock<\/a>,<br \/>\ntouches on some of the debates we&#8217;ve had on this blog about<br \/>\nsecularizing Buddhist teachings to make them accessible to everyone<br \/>\n(see Jerry&#8217;s Buddhism is not a Religion parts <a title=\"1\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/09\/buddhism-is-not-a-religion-pt-1-buddhists-on-a-plane.html\" id=\"c9ir\">1<\/a>, <a title=\"2\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/09\/buddhism-not-religion-god-problem.html\" id=\"v..e\">2<\/a> and <a title=\"3\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/09\/buddhism-is-not-a-religion-part-3-the-truth-shall-set-you-free.html\" id=\"e7x9\">3<\/a>).&nbsp; From the introduction of the piece:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I have a problem with something as important as deeper thinking being linked to any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/basics\/religion\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at Religion\" class=\"pt-basics-link\">religion<\/a>.<br \/>\nNot because I have anything against Buddhism or against any religion at<br \/>\nall. (Of all the organized religions, Buddhism appears to be one that<br \/>\ngenerates a minimum of human conflict.) The reason I have a problem is<br \/>\nit&#8217;s hard enough getting across the idea that being mindful is useful,<br \/>\nwithout activating a threat response from the billions of non-buddhists<br \/>\nwho could benefit from it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I<br \/>\ndo agree that the world would be a little bit better if everyone<br \/>\npracticed some form of mindfulness everyday, regardless of their<br \/>\nreligious leanings.&nbsp; As the author of the article points out, it<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t need to be religious and it doesn&#8217;t even need to be a formal<br \/>\nsitting practice.&nbsp; Practicing mindfulness can be as simple as taking<br \/>\nthree mindful breaths before you eat your meal.&nbsp;
