in Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>by Evelyn Cash<\/i><i><br \/><\/i><br \/>I came across this story yesterday from the <a title=\"Buddhist Channel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buddhistchannel.tv\/index.php?id=44,8582,0,0,1,0\" id=\"oef_\">Buddhist Channel<\/a><br \/>\nreporting that as the religion dies in Japan, Buddhist priests are<br \/>\nresorting to desperate measures to try and regain followers.&nbsp; The priests are<br \/>\ntrying everything from anime DVDs to monk and nun runway hip-hop<br \/>\nperformances but nothing seems to be working.&nbsp; I found this<br \/>\nparticularly interesting in light of the fact that Buddhism seems to be<br \/>\ngaining in popularity in the West.<\/p>\n<p>I do wonder: would the<br \/>\npriests in Japan be able to get more people back into the temples if they<br \/>\nstressed the practical aspects of Buddhist meditation and teachings,<br \/>\nrather than the more devotional religious aspects?&nbsp; That approach<br \/>\ncertainly worked here in the West, as noted in this 2006 story from the<br \/>\n<a title=\"Christian Science Monitor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/2006\/0914\/p14s01-lire.html\" id=\"zdon\">Christian Science Monitor<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>To quote Lama Surya Das from the CSM piece: &#8220;People are looking for experiential practices, not just a new belief<br \/>\nsystem or a new set of ethical rules which we already have, and are<br \/>\nmuch the same in all religions&#8230; It&#8217;s the<br \/>\ntransformative practices like meditation which people are really<br \/>\nattracted to.&#8221;&nbsp; Perhaps the Japanese people would also respond more positively to practical meditation instructions than &#8220;Buddhist&#8221;
