{"id":824,"date":"2009-09-24T14:53:40","date_gmt":"2009-09-24T14:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/09\/why-we-meditate-its-cheaper-than-adderall.html"},"modified":"2009-09-24T14:53:40","modified_gmt":"2009-09-24T14:53:40","slug":"why-we-meditate-its-cheaper-than-adderall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/onecity\/2009\/09\/why-we-meditate-its-cheaper-than-adderall.html","title":{"rendered":"Why We Meditate: It&#8217;s Cheaper Than Adderall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"meditation_buddhism_meditate.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/124\/import\/meditation_buddhism_meditate.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px;float: right\" height=\"247\" width=\"331\" \/><\/span><i>by Ethan Nichtern<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>This November 6 &amp; 7<\/strong>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dharma.org\/\">Buddhist<\/a>-inspired <a href=\"http:\/\/theidproject.org\/\">Interdependence Project<\/a> will be hosting our largest<br \/>\nfundraiser and event to date in the form of a 24- hour <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shambhala.org\/\">Meditation<\/a> Marathon in the<br \/>\nwindow displays of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abchome.com\/\"> ABC Carpet &amp; Home<\/a>, a wonderful and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability\">sustainable<\/a> store in New York City.<br \/>\nWe are aiming to raise funds for our non-profit organization to develop as a true<br \/>\ncommunity center, develop a radio show, and develop our activism<br \/>\nprojects in the coming year. We also need additional support to continue providing great<br \/>\nclasses, events and projects for the upcoming year, and expand the<br \/>\nscope of our transformative community.<\/p>\n<p>So far, about 85 people have signed up to participate. Three of us, myself included, are meditating for 24 hours straight! So why do we meditate? That&#8217;s a great question to ask yourself before you do it for 24 hours right on Broadway. Every week for the next seven weeks leading up to the event, we will share with you five answers to that questions from marathon participants. If you like an answer, please consider <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/O1XNz\">making a donation in support of the meditator who wrote it<\/a>. Any amount is appreciated, and it helps our little nonprofit with a big heart tremendously.
