{"id":742,"date":"2009-08-09T10:01:12","date_gmt":"2009-08-09T10:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/08\/taking-climate-change-seriously.html"},"modified":"2009-08-09T10:01:12","modified_gmt":"2009-08-09T10:01:12","slug":"taking-climate-change-seriously","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/onecity\/2009\/08\/taking-climate-change-seriously.html","title":{"rendered":"Taking Climate Change Seriously"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A growing number of policy makers are starting to consider <a href=\"http:\/\/topnews.us\/content\/26475-global-warming-melting-glaciers-us-geological-survey\">Global Warming<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/09\/business\/economy\/09view.html?hpw\">Climate Change <\/a>nothing less than a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/09\/science\/earth\/09climate.html\">national security threat<\/a>, according to an article in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_York_Times\">New York Times<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/climate_change.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"climate_change.gif\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/124\/import\/assets_c\/2009\/08\/climate_change-thumb-400x284-6932.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" class=\"mt-image-none\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div>(photo from unicef.org)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nI think it&#8217;s the biggest threat there could possibly be, dwarfing all other planetary concerns. I also think talking about it as national security is the way to go. Why can&#8217;t we rev up the same sense of patriotism to stopping using plastic bags that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_W._Bush\">Bush<\/a>&nbsp;used to work out his daddy issues in the Middle East? Why can&#8217;t we tell someone that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Local_food\">buying fruit<\/a>&nbsp;from 4000 miles away is a threat to the planet? Why does fear always have to be a tool of deception? Can&#8217;t it be a tool for reality too? Can&#8217;t instilling proper fear in people about actual threats aid our enlightenment as a society? I&#8217;m afraid of what will happen when parts of Earth become unlivable. As the article says, it gets real complicated real quickly when that happens. So let&#8217;s be properly afraid, and about the right things for once (as opposed to say, whether&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20090728\/ap_on_re_us\/us_obama_birth_certificate\">Obama was born here<\/a>&nbsp;or whether you look okay). And not the kind of fear that makes you freeze up. The kind of fear that makes you start a garden.
