{"id":723,"date":"2009-07-27T12:24:32","date_gmt":"2009-07-27T12:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/07\/merce-cunningham-is-dead.html"},"modified":"2009-07-27T12:24:32","modified_gmt":"2009-07-27T12:24:32","slug":"merce-cunningham-is-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/onecity\/2009\/07\/merce-cunningham-is-dead.html","title":{"rendered":"Merce Cunningham Is Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merce_Cunningham\">Merce Cunningham died <\/a>last night.&nbsp; He was 90 years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;Groundbreaking dance and performance visionary of the 20th and 21st century, exceptional performer and theorist, Merce created art until the end, choreographing a piece this winter at Brooklyn Academy of Music titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/18\/arts\/dance\/18merc.html\">&#8220;Nearly Ninety.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/18\/arts\/dance\/18merc.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-none\" height=\"420\" alt=\"annie_leibovitz_merce_cunningham.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/124\/import\/annie_leibovitz_merce_cunningham.jpg\" width=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/span>The first time I heard about Cunningham I was eight years old.&nbsp; My best friend Athena&#8217;s parents had taken her to a dance concert at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacobspillow.org\/\">Jacob&#8217;s Pillow<\/a>.&nbsp; I remember shaking with hilarity as she recreated the odd asymetric moves set to even odder atonal&nbsp;sounds.&nbsp; Merce Cunningham = not for children of eight.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The next time I intimately encountered Merce was in my avant-garde theory classes in college.&nbsp; A theoretical master-mind, Merce, along with his partner <a href=\"http:\/\/\/\">John Cage <\/a>and the whole <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Mountain_College\">Black Mountain<\/a> gang helped to define post-modernism, exposing, highlighting and transforming the interdependent elements that comprised performance and, by reification, human experience.&nbsp; As stated in the <a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/27\/merce-cunningham-dies\/?hp\">New York Times Artsbeat <\/a>(worth reading if you&#8217;re unfamiliar with Merce): <\/p>\n<p><em>In his final years he became almost routinely hailed as the world&#8217;s greatest choreographer. For many, he had simply been the greatest living artist since Samuel Beckett.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We also shared a birthday. <\/p>\n<p>Along with my previously discussed<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/06\/pina-bausch-dies-at-68.html\"> reverence for choreographers<\/a>, I have unlimited admiration and respect for thinkers that are interested in breaking down any kind of experience and looking at its composite parts.&nbsp;After all, that&#8217;s what the Buddha did with ultimate reality, don&#8217;t you think?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pina Bausch died June 30th.&nbsp; Merce Cunningham leaves us less than a month later.&nbsp; The European then the American.&nbsp;&nbsp;The mother and&nbsp;then the father.&nbsp;&nbsp;The corporeal then the cerebral.&nbsp; A friend mentioned that&nbsp;it feels like that week that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/08\/03\/AR2007080300482.html\">Begman and Antonioni<\/a>&nbsp;both died &#8211; like a certain kind of monolith of mentorship&nbsp;has crumbled and the future seems suddenly&nbsp;less&nbsp;determined than before.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Merce Cunningham died last night.&nbsp;
