But the winds of impermanence blow cold this July day.<br \/><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"hiroshow11.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/124\/import\/hiroshow11.JPG\" class=\"mt-image-none\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\" \/><\/span><br \/>Adam &#8220;MCA&#8221; Yauch, leader of the Beastie Boys and practicing Tibetan buddhist, has cancer &#8212; a salivary gland tumor, apparently not life-threatening &#8212; and the Beasties are cancelling all their summer dates. <\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynvegan.com\/archives\/2009\/07\/adam_yauch_has.html\">Adam Yauch Has Cancer<\/a>&#8221; news and details are well summarized, with video of the announcement, of the always awesome <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynvegan.com\/\">Brooklyn Vegan<\/a> music site. (No, you will not be subject to vegan propaganda if you go there, just lots and lots of indie\/alternative music news.)<\/p>\n<p>And WHAT on earth does this have to do with buddhism? Well, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shambhalasun.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=2106\">Shambhala Sun<\/a> interview with Adam starts:&nbsp; <br \/><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif\"><br \/>&#8220;<span class=\"article_blurb\">Beastie<br \/>\nBoy Adam Yauch brought Tibetan music and Buddhist philosophy to their<br \/>\nlatest album, <i>Ill Communication<\/i>. He talks to <i>The Shambhala Sun<\/i> about<br \/>\nhip-hop, hardcore, helping people, and &#8216;gettin&#8217; stupid.&#8217;<\/span> &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And cancer put a full stop to his plans today.<br \/>Impermanence of all conditioned phenomena &#8211; doesn&#8217;t get much more Noble Truthy than that.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nAnd that&#8217;s my photo of Adam, above. I&#8217;ve been a fan for (gulp) decades<br \/>\n&#8212; he&#8217;s my generation. I still remember them playing in Washington<br \/>\nSquare Park, in New York, and I have that early ROIR cassette of them<br \/>\ndoing some kind of speed punk hardcore thing, tho&#8217; I haven&#8217;t played it<br \/>\nin years. And I always, always adored the Beasties&#8217; irreverent take as<br \/>\nwell as their reverence for excellence. Their aesthetic always struck<br \/>\nme as buddhist.<\/p>\n<p>Tho&#8217; it looks like Adam&#8217;s parotid gland tumor isn&#8217;t life-threatening,<br \/>\nit does close down the Beastie concert plans this summer. Just this morning<br \/>\nI was talking to my brother about his plans to go to Montreal to see<br \/>\nthem, perhaps.
