{"id":622,"date":"2009-06-02T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-02T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/2009\/06\/no-smoking-in-shangri-la.html"},"modified":"2009-06-02T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-02T09:00:00","slug":"no-smoking-in-shangri-la","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/onecity\/2009\/06\/no-smoking-in-shangri-la.html","title":{"rendered":"No Smoking in Shangri-La"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>On Monday June 1st, Nebraska banned smoking in most public indoor places, and Japan also banned smoking on limited and express trains on Japan Railway Group.<\/li>\n<li>In May, North Carolina and Michigan banned smoking in public places.<\/li>\n<li>LA County plans to ban smoking in county parks within the next few months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Smoking and tobacco sales have been<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/62586822@N00\/2767049071\"> totally illegal <\/a>in the Buddhist nation of Bhutan since 2004. <\/b>This factoid completely blows my mind.<\/p>\n<p>(Photo from <a href=\"2767049071\">flickr<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/onecity\/smokingmonk.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"smokingmonk.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/124\/import\/assets_c\/2009\/06\/smokingmonk-thumb-500x333-5436.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhutan.gov.bt\/government\/index_new.php\">Bhutan<\/a> has been referred to as the Last Shangri-La, a heaven on earth (maybe much like the concept of Shambhala, but I am not well versed enough in the etymology to tell you for sure). Bhutan is a predominantly Buddhist nation. Tourists weren&#8217;t allowed in the country until relatively recently, and television was also banned until 1999. The reason for all these restrictions? For the well-being of the people, and to protect the environment and culture. <\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if I could even picture an America where smoking was totally banned.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth precept in Buddhism is to refrain from intoxicants. This is a gray area for 21st Century Buddhists. Having a drink or two or three, depending on who you are, doesn&#8217;t seem to be a big deal. We&#8217;re only concerned with actions and intentions that cause suffering to ourselves and others, right? <\/p>\n<p>So the argument could be: if a person chooses to smoke, if it does not cause suffering, then it is not against the fifth precept, right? But what about second-hand smoke? If second-hand smoke causes cancer (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2007\/02\/smoking_environ.php\">as well as releases toxins into the environment<\/a>), then doesn&#8217;t someone else&#8217;s decision to smoke cause suffering to others?<\/p>\n<p>But then, if we&#8217;re going with that angle, then I shouldn&#8217;t ever eat a hamburger and I shouldn&#8217;t ever ride in a car or use detergent or bug spray or heating or electricity or buy anything new&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I suppose we have to pick our Buddhist battles. Plastic bags should be gone, we can mostly agree on that. We should recycle.
