I liked it, so I&#8217;m passing it along.<br \/>\n(Note: the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twelve_Nid%C4%81nas\">12 Nid?nas<\/a> are traditionally described as a process that spans three lifetimes or more. The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abhidharma-kosa\"><em>Abhidharma-ko?a <\/em><\/a> of Vasubandhu describes a scheme whereby all occur in any given moment, and some modern teachers teach this interpretation, but this is traditionally a tertiary view. Nobody teaches that it transpires over an hour or so, as below. Nonetheless, as a metaphor for the process, I think the following is useful).<br \/>\n<strong>One Situation: Going to a Party<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>An illustration of the Twelve Nid?nas<\/em> by Douglas Penick<br \/>\n1.      <strong>Ignorance<\/strong> \u2013 enter the door, don\u2019t know anyone, no reference point, freeze, go numb, heightened self-consciousness<br \/>\n2.      <strong>Formations<\/strong> \u2013 can\u2019t stay at the door all night, must do something, impulse to find a landing spot, vision narrows to find a reference point, head for the bar<br \/>\n<!--more-->3.      <strong>Consciousness<\/strong> \u2013 have now made it into the party, but need to nourish yourself, oral compulsion, have a drink<br \/>\n4.      <strong>Name\/Form<\/strong> \u2013 feel warmth pervading body, feel fortified, empowered, embodied, feel more expansive<br \/>\n5.      <strong>Six Senses<\/strong> \u2013 survey the situation, look for someone to talk to<br \/>\n6.      <strong>Contact<\/strong> &#8211; see someone interesting who catches your eye.<br \/>\n7.      <strong>Feeling<\/strong> \u2013 person looks good, attractive, worthy of our attention, we feel good<br \/>\n8.      <strong>Craving<\/strong> \u2013 desire to talk to them, engage them, irresistible impulse, so lonely<br \/>\n9.      <strong>Grasping<\/strong> \u2013 mind is fixated on how to approach them, can\u2019t ignore them, already caught<br \/>\n10.  <strong>Becoming<\/strong> \u2013 go over to talk to the person, yak, yak, yak<br \/>\n11.  <strong>Birth<\/strong> &#8211; get to know the person, give birth to a relationship<br \/>\n12.  <strong>Aging &amp; Death<\/strong> \u2013 conversation, focus starts to flag, diffuse, interrupted, reference point dies, gap, no one to talk to<br \/>\n1.      <strong>Ignorance<\/strong> \u2013 panic, go numb again, heightened self-consciousness, aloneness<br \/>\n2.      <strong>Formation<\/strong> \u2013 head back to the bar for another drink   ETC!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was sent around on the Shambhala listserv.
