I tried and I tried to unpack Right View \u2013 I wrote, I deleted, I quoted, I listed and then I decided that I. Knows. Not. Understanding philosophical points and so forth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><span style=\"font-size:9.5pt;font-family:Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><span style=\"font-size:9.5pt;font-family:Verdana\">Thanks Greg Zwahlen &#8211; got it.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Actually, wait \u2013 I\u2019m not sure if I do.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>What does that have to do with what Thich Nhat Hanh says about Right View as watering wholesome as opposed to unwholesome seeds?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Does Right View (or the aspiration to attain right view) pertain to how you conduct yourself?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Or does it, in the relative, concept-oriented world, as opposed to the ultimate, concept-less world, pertain to <em>interpreting<\/em> the teachings, um, right?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Is Right View saying no to New Criticism?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Is it saying, like I think -sorry if I misquote you- Leon suggested in class, that Right View is an agreement with the teachings of the Buddha and then a subsequent attempt to strip away all the illusions that contradict said teachings?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Or is it only referring to a mental state and not the subsequent actions?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m in a Buddhist mind eddy over the whole deal and would love some thoughts or opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><span style=\"font-size:9.5pt;font-family:Verdana\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><span style=\"font-size:9.5pt;font-family:Verdana\">Meanwhile let\u2019s move on to RIGHT INTENTION:<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Now I must say, I thought this one was going to be a bit easier.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>After all, Right Intention seems intuitive.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve all experienced the physical difference between a pure and impure intention.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It seems like Right Intention would just be that \u2013 having intent that precedes action to be based on the nice stuff as opposed the selfish stuff.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And maybe it is.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>However trusty Ethan, instead of giving us readings with helpful chapter headings like, \u201cHow to interpret the 2nd step on the 8-fold path that is always called Right Intention by everyone smart in Buddhism\u201d gave us a reading from Thich Nhat Hanh called \u201cRight Thinking\u201d (which is how Thich Nhat Hanh interprets the second wisdom training) and a reading, by Joseph Goldstein (from the Theravaden school) in <em>Seeking the Heart of Wisdom<\/em> about understanding karma and the role of intention in cause and effect.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>So how does that all pull together?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>How could Right Intention and Right Thinking be synonymous?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>How does intention immediately relate to cause and effect?<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><span style=\"font-size:9.5pt;font-family:Verdana\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><span style=\"font-size:9.5pt;font-family:Verdana\">The contemplation for the week is \u201cWhat\u2019s the link between Intention and Action?\u201d In the 5-7 class Patrick mentioned this study that something like, 90 percent of the decisions we make are sub-conscious.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Can we link that to Right Intention in some way?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Is it a contradiction?
