{"id":2527,"date":"2011-09-27T11:55:16","date_gmt":"2011-09-27T15:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/?p=2527"},"modified":"2011-09-27T12:09:48","modified_gmt":"2011-09-27T16:09:48","slug":"aclu-planned-parenthood-combine-to-fight-mississippi-constitutional-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/2011\/09\/aclu-planned-parenthood-combine-to-fight-mississippi-constitutional-amendment.html","title":{"rendered":"ACLU, Planned Parenthood combine to fight Mississippi constitutional amendment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Planned Parenthood and the\u00a0American Civil Liberties Union have joined forces to\u00a0create the pro-abortion \u201cMississippians for Healthy Families\u201d with a goal of defeating a constitutional amendment limiting abortion in the Magnolia State.<\/p>\n<p>Christine Dhanagom\u00a0of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/planned-parenthood-aclu-create-front-organization-to-defeat-pro-life-legisl\" target=\"_blank\">LifeSiteNews<\/a><\/em> writes that\u00a0&#8220;Yes on 26,&#8221; a coalition of anti-abortion groups, obtained a copy of the Mississippians for Healthy Families\u2019 <em>Statement of Organization for a Political Committee<\/em> from the Secretary of State\u2019s office.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The official filing lists Nsombi Lambright, Kay Scott and Barry Chase as the organization\u2019s officers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lambright is the Executive Director of the ACLU of Mississippi,&#8221; notes Dhangagom,\u00a0&#8220;Scott is the CEO of Planned Parenthood Southeast, which covers Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi; and Chase is the President of Memphis Regional Planned Parenthood in Tennessee.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chase\u2019s clinic made headlines in 2009 when one of his employees was caught in a videotaped sting coaching an actress\u00a0posing as a 14-year-old girlm explaining to her how\u00a0to lie about the age of her boyfriend &#8212; who the girl had said was 31.<\/p>\n<p>A space on the\u00a0official filing\u00a0which requests a description of the purpose of the committee and the identification of \u201caffiliated or connected organizations\u201d is left blank, reports Dhangagom. Lambright is listed as the director and Scott as the treasurer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/yeson26.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yes on 26<\/a>\u00a0notes on its website\u00a0the financial investment that Planned Parenthood, the nation\u2019s largest abortion provider, has made\u00a0in the Mississippi campaign:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAbortion, to put it plainly, is a very lucrative business, and this has been true from the beginning. By last count, Planned Parenthood (a tax-exempt organization!) has $951 million in total assets Kay Scott and her partners in the abortion industry have a very good reason to make sure Amendment 26 doesn\u2019t bring an end to their payday in Mississippi.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The organization \u201cMississippians for Healthy Families\u201d is simply a front organization for Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, who are attempting to prevent a pro-life amendment from being added to the state constitution, according to a state pro-life organization,&#8221; concludes Dhangagom.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/yeson26.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yes on 26 <\/a>website also notes:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Powell, the ACLU\u2019s national legal director, says he considers abortion to be the ACLU\u2019s number one priority; the defense of the First Amendment, (the alleged heart and soul of the ACLU\u2019s mission), was listed third, after civil rights. Why? Simply follow the money. Defending abortion \u2018rights\u2019 is a much more lucrative venture than defending free-speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMississipians for Healthy Families\u201d\u00a0meanwhile accused\u00a0Yes on 26 of setting up a \u201cfake website.\u201d Indeed, &#8220;Yes on 26&#8221; uses the Internet address <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mississippiansforhealthyfamilies.com\/\">www.MississippiansForHealthyFamilies.com<\/a>\u00a0as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yeson26.net\/\">www.YesOn26.net<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If passed, the Mississippi amendment will define a person as \u201cevery human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Planned Parenthood and the\u00a0American Civil Liberties Union have joined forces to\u00a0create the pro-abortion \u201cMississippians for Healthy Families\u201d with a goal of defeating a constitutional amendment limiting abortion in the Magnolia State.
