{"id":2452,"date":"2011-08-22T18:17:23","date_gmt":"2011-08-22T22:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/?p=2452"},"modified":"2011-08-22T16:29:33","modified_gmt":"2011-08-22T20:29:33","slug":"malawi-human-rights-group-to-study-witchcraft-based-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/2011\/08\/malawi-human-rights-group-to-study-witchcraft-based-violence.html","title":{"rendered":"Malawi human rights group to study witchcraft-based violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0human rights group in the African nation of Malawi\u00a0has secured a $71,000 grant from the Royal Norwegian Embassy to launch a study which will address the issues of witchcraft-based violence on children, women and the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The project, which is currently in progress, is in the form of a study aimed at assessing the extent and nature of witchcraft-based violence against children, women and the elderly,&#8221; George Thindwa, executive director of the Association for Secular Humanism (ASH), founded last year to fight abuses against alleged witches, told the Malawi newspaper, the <em>Maravi Post.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He said part of the grant will be used to advocate for a new witchcraft act which should safeguard the rights of victims.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi\u2019s state-funded Law Commission is reviewing the witchcraft act, which was made into law in 1911 during the British colonial era.
