Eleven were merchants and nine were farmers and large plantation owners.<\/div>\n<div>These were men of means who were well educated.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Nevertheless, they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/files\/2011\/07\/declaration.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2255\" title=\"declaration\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/07\/declaration-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>In signing the Declaration of Independence, these 56 men pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Five of the 56 signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, while another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2242\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2242\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/07\/McKean.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2242 \" title=\"McKean\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/07\/McKean.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">McKean<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to keep his family on the move. He served in the Congress without pay, while his family was kept in hiding. All of his possessions were taken from him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Vandals and\/or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/files\/2011\/07\/nelson.gif\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/files\/2011\/07\/nelson1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2251 alignright\" title=\"nelson\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/07\/nelson1-252x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson noted that British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters.
