Fireworks\u00a0shows are among thousands of events that will require environmental review under a new California court ruling.\u00a0Such impact studies can take a year and cost tens of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n

Alex Roth, a spokesman for\u00a0La Jolla\u00a0Mayor Jerry Sanders, called the suit\u00a0a \u201cbizarre crusade to stop fireworks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s next,” he asked,\u00a0“a lawsuit against swimmers for polluting the ocean with their suntan lotion?\u201d<\/p>\n

What started as a\u00a0court battle over fireworks\u00a0has resulted in new regulations\u00a0that could\u00a0cancel a wide range of\u00a0special events\u00a0— including\u00a0the area’s annual\u00a0Rock \u2019n\u2019 Roll Marathon\u00a0and even private\u00a0birthday\u00a0parties held at public parks.<\/p>\n

Marco\u00a0Gonzalez, who brought the suit on behalf of a local\u00a0environmental rights foundation, said he was delighted with the ruling — and shrugged off criticism\u00a0that his lawsuit was unpatriotic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you were to sum it up with\u00a0one word, I would say \u2018vindication.\u2019 It\u2019s vindication for the\u00a0environment and it\u2019s vindication for my client because of the amount\u00a0of disparaging comments and general negativity that was thrown our way,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cThere\u00a0are a whole host of impacts that we know occur from fireworks shows,\u00a0from marine mammals to marine birds to water quality to traffic to noise\u00a0to the air.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the judge’s ruling, the\u00a0lawsuit had already spurred regional pollution regulators to\u00a0adopt\u00a0new\u00a0rules for fireworks shot over beaches and bays.<\/p>\n
