Then on October 21, the whole world would be destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a really tough weekend,\u201d the 89-year-old Camping, while standing in his driveway, told the <em>San Francisco Chronicle <\/em>on Sunday afternoon before turning and walking back into his house. \u201cI\u2019m looking for answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1625\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1625\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/files\/2011\/05\/camping-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1625\" title=\"camping 1\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/05\/camping-1-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A camper proclaiming the Judgment Day message<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So are his followers. And it is those tender believers\u00a0that you and I should remember today. One hard lesson\u00a0many Christians have\u00a0learned is that leaders &#8212; religious, political or otherwise &#8212;\u00a0invariably have feet of clay. If you or I take our eyes off of Jesus and put them on Harold Camping or any other human being, we set ourselves up for disappointment and disillusionment.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is:<em>\u00a0Humans fail. <\/em>God doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1623\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1623\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/files\/2011\/05\/camping3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1623\" title=\"camping3\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/05\/camping3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the thousands of billboards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Retiree Robert Fitzpatrick knows all too well. At 6 p.m. on May 21, he was standing in the drizzling rain in New York City&#8217;s Times Square, surrounded by jeering tourists as the appointed hour came and went. The 60-year-old retiree had spent $140,000 &#8212; almost everything he had &#8212; on hundreds of billboards proclaiming the Armagedon that Camping had predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously shaken when it didn&#8217;t come, he told ABC News,\u00a0&#8220;I can&#8217;t tell you what I feel right now,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Obviously, I haven&#8217;t understood it correctly because we&#8217;re still here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/2011\/03\/so-judgment-day-is-gonna-be-may-21-huh.html\">What did Jesus say about those who predict the day and time of His return?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Counselors from Calvary Bible Church in nearby Milpitas, California, spent Saturday afternoon in front of Campings&#8217; Family Radio headquarters in Oakland, offering spiritual support to\u00a0Camping&#8217;s dejected followers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1621\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/05\/end-of-the-world-may-21-20111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1621\" title=\"end-of-the-world-may-21-2011\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/218\/2011\/05\/end-of-the-world-may-21-20111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An unidentified follower with a flyer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We are here to reach out to those people who might have bought the lie,&#8221; said one worker, who said the intent is to &#8220;embrace them and reach out to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An <em>International Business Times<\/em> reporter got\u00a0Camping to answer his door at his Alameda, California, home and got a brief statement. When asked about his silence since the prediction, Camping said he needed more time and wanted to think and recover.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/2011\/05\/25-times-in-the-past-that-the-doomsday-prophets-apparently-missed.html\">25 times in the past when Judgment Day prophecies have proven bogus<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What was it that Camping declared absolutely was going to happen May 21?
