Adults start to behave like unruly children, shoving and fighting one another over that last flat screen TV or designer coat. At best its embarrassing; at worst, it can be deadly. <\/font><font> Last year, a <\/font><font>34-year-old <\/font>Walmart<br \/>\nemployee was trampled to death after frenzied shoppers literally busted down the front doors of the store. But it didn&#8217;t end there. Police officers and EMTs who arrived to<br \/>\nperform CPR on the employee were stepped on and injured; even a<br \/>\npregnant woman was trampled on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\"><font>What&#8217;s going on here? What is impelling this grotesque Darwinian push-or-be-pushed survival of the fittest at its ugliest? <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\"><font>The all-consuming quest for more and more <i>stuff<\/i>. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\">I&#8217;m as much of a shopper as the next guy<br \/>\n(probably more so, in fact). And I hardly lead the spartan lifestyle of<br \/>\na cave-swelling monk; I have my fair share of possessions, and my own<br \/>\nstruggles with being attached to them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\"><font>Still, Black Friday may be a good a time to sit back and to take stock of how much we&#8217;re possessed by our possessions.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\"><font>Some Hindu wisdom to help put things in perspective:<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/omsweetom\/assets_c\/2009\/11\/Boat_Ganges_Varanasi-9613.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/123\/import\/assets_c\/2009\/11\/Boat_Ganges_Varanasi-thumb-300x224-9613.jpg\" alt=\"Boat_Ganges_Varanasi.JPG\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px;text-align: center\" height=\"224\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\" align=\"center\"><span>&#8220;It&#8217;s<br \/>\nnot where you live or how much you possess; rather, it is how you live<br \/>\nand how much you are being possessed by your possessions. You can have<br \/>\nmany things as long as you don&#8217;t get possessed. The minute you allow<br \/>\nthem to possess you, you are doomed. A boat&#8217;s duty is to stay in the<br \/>\nwater and carry people from one shore to the other shore. To do its<br \/>\njob, the boat must be in the water, but the minute the water is in the<br \/>\nboat, you sink. A multimillionaire may have numerous possessions but<br \/>\nmay not be attached to them, while a <em>sadhu<\/em> may be attached to his own water pot. It is not the thing in itself that binds us, it is our attachment to things. <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\" align=\"center\"><span>God bless you.
