Because people like lists, and because I am people.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Best Traditional Christmas Carol: <\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.41051.com\/xmaslyrics\/awaymanger.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">O Little Town of Bethlehem<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beautiful melody and lovely lyrics without any dumb &#8220;sweet baby Jesus doesn&#8217;t even cry&#8221; ideas (see below). Second place goes to &#8220;O Holy Night,&#8221; for being in 3\/4 time and for the emotionally resonant transition to the &#8220;Fall on your knees&#8221; chorus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Worst Traditional Christmas Carol:<\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.41051.com\/xmaslyrics\/awaymanger.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Away in a Manger<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Has to be the sappiest Jesus song ever. &#8220;Little Lord Jesus no crying he makes&#8221;? Please. &#8220;Look down from the sky&#8221;? Probably not, unless Jesus is ballooning. Bad theology all around.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Best New Christmas Song:<\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyrics007.com\/Sixpence%20None%20The%20Richer%20Lyrics\/Babe%20In%20The%20Straw%20Lyrics.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Babe in the Straw<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I prefer the original version by Derri Daugherty, Steve Hindalong, and Riki Michele from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvot.ca\/vis\/noel.a.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Noel<\/span><\/a> album (as opposed to subsequent versions by Leigh Nash or Caedmon&#8217;s Call). Sidenote: of all the songs in the world, I have performed\/sung\/played this one the most in front of people.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Worst New(ish) Christmas Song:<\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stlyrics.com\/lyrics\/homealone\/rockinaroundthechristmastree.htm\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Rockin&#8217; Around the Christmas Tree<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t that new &#8212; it was first written and recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958. But why has this become the go-to upbeat song on Christmas albums? Is it because it has &#8220;rockin'&#8221; in the title? So annoying. But it ends up on pretty much every Christmas album. Thanks, Brenda Lee.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Best Nativity Set:<\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000GFHGIS?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jasoboye-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000GFHGIS\">Playmobil Nativity Set<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boyett.smugmug.com\/Fun\/NovDec-2009\/DSC0088\/728873678_tkvYL-S.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor: pointer;width: 400px;height: 266px\" src=\"https:\/\/boyett.smugmug.com\/Fun\/NovDec-2009\/DSC0088\/728873678_tkvYL-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My family has this (that&#8217;s ours in the photo above). I loved Playmobil stuff when I was a kid, even though they weren&#8217;t as poseable as Star Wars figurines. My kids still play with this nativity scene, by the way, and there have been times when Darth Vader has shown up lurking behind the Wise Men. It all turns out OK, though, because Yoda can hide behind the manger.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Worst Nativity Set:<\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourgifthouse.com\/christmas\/37233.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Any Nativity Made of Snowmen<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourgifthouse.com\/christmas\/images\/37233.3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor: pointer;width: 420px;height: 420px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yourgifthouse.com\/christmas\/images\/37233.3.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Look, I understand that snowmen are cute and seasonal and stuff. But a carrot-nosed Baby Jesus who might melt come March is the worst kind of savior.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Best Holiday Special:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Charlie Brown Christmas Special<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jasonboyett.com\/2007\/12\/my-favorite-christmas-special.html\">shared my love<\/a> for this holiday classic before. From the mystical group hand-waving that turns a scrawny tree into a beautifully decorated masterpiece, to the direct recital of the Christmas story from Luke 2, there&#8217;s no contest between this show and any others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.i-mockery.com\/shorts\/holiday-specials\/hemanxmas.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;float: right;cursor: pointer;width: 178px;height: 236px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.i-mockery.com\/shorts\/holiday-specials\/hemanxmas.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Worst Holiday Special:<\/span><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/He-Man_&amp;_She-Ra_Christmas_Special\">He-Man and She-ra: A Christmas Special<\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic\"> <\/span>(1985)<\/p>\n<p>Apparently I missed this special, but if it was anything like the cartoon TV series, it was awesomely cheesy, had homosexual undertones, and featured a character named &#8220;Man-at-Arms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Best Christmas Color:<\/span><br \/><span>Red<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I think this is an obvious choice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Worst Christmas Color:<\/span><br \/><span>Green<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Clearly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Your turn. <\/span>What&#8217;s on your best and worst Christmas lists?
