{"id":569,"date":"2010-08-02T10:19:31","date_gmt":"2010-08-02T10:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/omeoflittlefaith\/2010\/08\/taking-my-doubt-to-wapo.html"},"modified":"2010-08-02T10:19:31","modified_gmt":"2010-08-02T10:19:31","slug":"taking-my-doubt-to-wapo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/omeoflittlefaith\/2010\/08\/taking-my-doubt-to-wapo.html","title":{"rendered":"Taking My Doubt to WaPo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>I was thrilled last week<\/b> to have been given the chance to write a piece <a href=\"http:\/\/newsweek.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\/guestvoices\/2010\/07\/the_doubting_christian.html\">about being a doubting Christian<\/a> for the Washington Post&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/newsweek.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\"><i>On Faith<\/i><\/a> section, as one of their &#8220;Guest Voices.&#8221; It was linked from the WashingtonPost.com&#8217;s front page on Sunday (right under a Chelsea Clinton wedding feature) and brought a lot of traffic this direction.<\/p>\n<p>To those of you who ended up here from the column&#8217;s link, welcome.<\/p>\n<p>To those of you who didn&#8217;t read the column, here&#8217;s a quick excerpt:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>Why is doubt so taboo?<\/b> Biblical commands to &#8220;believe and not doubt&#8221;<br \/>\n(James 1:6) are culprits, although it helps to read them alongside the<br \/>\nstories of heroes like Abraham, David, and the disciples&#8211;who asked<br \/>\ndirect, honest questions without any smiting-based repercussions. <\/p>\n<p>Another problem is our need to belong. Christianity can be an<br \/>\nappearance-driven culture just like high school or the country club.<br \/>\nPeople want to fit in.
