Today&#8217;s subject? <span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Living Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">The Living Bible (TLB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">First published in:<\/span> 1971, by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tyndale.com\/\">Tyndale House Publishers<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Translation style:<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bible_version_debate#Paraphrase\">Paraphrase<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Quick description:<\/span> A bestseller in the early 70s, <span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Living Bible<\/span> is a flat-out paraphrase by publisher and author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2005\/juneweb-only\/55.0a.html\">Kenneth Taylor<\/a>. The language is as clear and conversational as, well, a conversation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Why you should read it: <\/span>It\u2019s as readable as any Bible gets. Taylor got the idea while trying to explain difficult passages to his children, so he wrote it with that audience in mind. In that regard, it works pretty well. Unless you\u2019re reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=judges%2019:16-30;&amp;version=31;\">the really violent parts<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Not so fast:<\/span> It\u2019s a paraphrase of an English translation (according to Taylor, he paraphrased it from the 1901 <a href=\"http:\/\/ebible.org\/asv\/\">American Standard Version<\/a>), so it\u2019s not the most accurate Bible on the shelf when it comes to the original languages.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Example:<\/span><br \/>\u201cYou      shall not make yourselves any idols: any images resembling animals, birds,      or fish.\u201d (Exodus 20:4)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor      God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son so that anyone who      believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.\u201d (John 3:16)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s Part 5 of our survey of popular biblical translations, based on Chapter 7 of Pocket Guide to the Bible.
