MacGyver. <\/span>Farhad Manjoo &#8212; former &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/machinist.salon.com\/\">Machinist<\/a>&#8221; columnist at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/\">Salon<\/a> who just recently joined the team at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\">Slate<\/a> &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/ent\/tv\/review\/2008\/07\/22\/macgyver\/\">writes about the equal doses of brilliance and lameness<\/a> that come from rewatching &#8220;MacGyver&#8221; episodes on DVD as a grown-up. &#8220;But to adult eyes &#8216;MacGyver&#8217; is often too goofy by half,&#8221; he writes. Noted. I loved Mac as a burgeoning teenager. There were reruns on a couple years ago, and I ended up watching an episode with fresh, adult eyes. The goofiness was high. In that ep, MacGyver actually resuscitated a heart-attack victim using a microphone cable and silver candlesticks. Kids, don&#8217;t try that at home.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rusted-crush.com\/macgyver\/season3a.html#ep48\">the Bigfoot episode<\/a>? Still awesome. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B000SQFC2M?tag=saloncom08-20&amp;camp=14573&amp;creative=327641&amp;linkCode=as1&amp;creativeASIN=B000SQFC2M&amp;adid=1AZA5CYCW1XF2ZJC9A6G&amp;\">The complete series is out on DVD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Addendum 1: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_problems_solved_by_MacGyver\">Read a comprehensive list of the problems he MacGuyvered his way out of here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Addendum 2:<\/span> I own a Swiss Army Knife.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">2. Mark Hurst, <\/span>author of the self-published (and successful) book <a href=\"http:\/\/bitliteracy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Bit Literacy<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/goodexperience.com\/2008\/07\/following-up-on-these.php\">reveals the secrets of the book publishing industry<\/a> &#8212; and the reasons he decided to self-publish instead of go through the mainstream channels. He makes some very good points. Aspiring authors will want to read this. Especially the part about how &#8220;you, the author, <i>can&#8217;t<\/i> be in it for the money &#8212; it doesn&#8217;t pay enough. You should write a book because you believe in it.&#8221; Don&#8217;t write a book for the money. Go tool around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphjam.com\">Graph Jam<\/a>.
