Like Dick Cheney, eclipses have long been considered harbingers of doom. This one is particularly a big deal &#8212; the longest one of the 21st century. We won&#8217;t see one this long again until 2132. I personally can&#8217;t wait until that one arrives. Neither can Dick Cheney.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Worth noting:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\"><span>\u2022 <\/span>Hindu mythology is suspicious of solar eclipses. If by &#8220;suspicious&#8221; you mean it is believed that<\/span> eclipses occur when the demons <span class=\"yshortcuts\">Rahu<\/span> and <span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\">Ketu<\/span> swallow the sun. This is bad news. Not only does it plunge the world into demonic darkness, but it turns food inedible and water undrinkable. Also, those are some really huge demons. Shudder.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\"><span>\u2022 <\/span><\/span>Hindu mythology also suggests pregnant women stay indoors during an eclipse, to keep their babies from developing <span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\">eclipsey birth defects.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\"><span>\u2022 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\">Another good idea during a solar eclipse? F<\/span>asting and ritual bathing. <span class=\"body\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/english\/2009-07-22-voa35.cfm\">Thousands of Hindus took a dip in the river Ganges<\/a> today, just to be safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\"><span>\u2022 <\/span><\/span>Only it&#8217;s not safe when that ritual bath turns into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5iX8d-T09U9BY--80N9QWImFwW2ewD99JGMNO0\">a 2,500-person stampede<\/a> like the one at Varanasi, on one of the river&#8217;s banks. A 65-year-old woman was killed and several others injured.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\"><span>\u2022 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\">In other not-safe news, Mumbai<\/span> astrologer Raj Kumar Sharma <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/afp\/20090720\/sc_afp\/scienceastronomyeclipseasiatourismsuperstition\">predicted a violent attack on Indian soil<\/a> as a result of the eclipse, along with the possibility of a devastating <span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\">natural disaster in Southeast Asia<\/span>. Skip is clinically insane, though, so I don&#8217;t believe him.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\"><span>\u2022 <\/span><\/span>Chinese tradition explains an eclipse with stories about a heavenly dog eating the sun. <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2009\/WORLD\/asiapcf\/07\/22\/solar.eclipse\/\">From CNN<\/a>: &#8220;As the story goes, people would make noise to scare off the dog and rescue the sun, said Bill Yeung, president of the Hong Kong Astronomical Society.&#8221; This might explain why Skip was shouting and waving around <span style=\"font-style: italic\">maracas<\/span> today in his backyard.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;cursor: pointer\" class=\"yshortcuts\"><span>\u2022 <\/span><\/span>The Shanghai zoo <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/asia\/article6722705.ece\">put up special lights<\/a> today to keep zoo animals from being too freaked out by the sudden darkness. My question is why didn&#8217;t they do this yesterday, <span style=\"font-style: italic\">before<\/span> the giant dog ate the sun?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/00592\/eclipse_592305a.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor: pointer;width: 585px;height: 350px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/00592\/eclipse_592305a.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enjoy this eclipse day, even though nothing happens at all here on the western side of the earth.
