\"matthew<\/a>A terrifying new phenomenon is sweeping the internet<\/strong> and endangering the lives of innocent children everywhere.<\/p>\n

Except that no, it isn’t.<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s called the Momo Challenge.<\/strong> It is primarily aimed at small children, who are convinced by YouTube videos (sometimes spliced into the middle of a Peppa pig video) or by WhatsApp messages to do a number of tasks, each one becoming more dangerous than the last one.<\/p>\n

Police departments have issued dire warnings to parents about it — even though there’s been no evidence it’s actually happening.<\/em><\/p>\n

This culminates in Momo<\/strong> encouraging the child to commit suicide. This has caused several reported deaths of children worldwide.<\/p>\n

“Reported,” sure — the same way that uncle of yours whose beliefs you can’t stand is always re-posting misinformation in the form of memes on Facebook.<\/em><\/p>\n

Parents are encouraged to monitor their children’s online activities more closely.<\/p>\n

Nothing wrong with that, but they’d better monitor their own “activities” too. We have a bumper crop of misinformation out there lately, thanks to Jupiter square Neptune<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

UPDATE:<\/strong> It turns out the Momo Challenge doesn’t actually exist. It’s an Urban Legend that gained traction simply because it seemed somewhat plausible.<\/p>\n

Just you watch: someone’s going to start doing it for REAL now. Freakin’ Jupiter square Neptune.<\/em><\/p>\n
