Who was the first person to ride a bicycle?<\/strong> Think about it for a second. Did you ever learn how to ride a bicycle? Odds are very good that at some point in your life you did. And so far as I can tell, the old adage is perfectly true: you never forget how to do it. But at the same time, imagine this: what if you had never seen anyone ride a bicycle before?<\/strong> What if you were the very first person<\/em> who got the idea that it could be done at all?<\/p>\n

Now, think back to when you were learning to ride a bike. Remember that feeling when you were a little kid, when you simply could not get the hang of it? Maybe some of you were naturals at cycling, but that’s not my experience. If it’s the sort of thing you’d never seen being done before, the whole concept seems a bit ridiculous.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What got into that first cyclist’s head that made him or her think it could be done? Staying balanced on two wheels sounds incredibly stupid if you think about it. Try staying upright on a bicycle for a few seconds without putting your feet on the ground. It’s pretty much impossible. Now imagine the first maniac who thought “…but if I just kept moving, what would happen? Maybe it would all work out somehow and I could go in a straight line with this thing!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s just nuts. And yet once you’ve learned it, it’s the most natural thing in the world.<\/em> And unicycles? Don’t get me started on unicycles. Please. That’s even nuttier.<\/p>\n

So, you see: nothing truly new and exciting in life ever happens (other than natural disasters of course) unless someone is willing to do something crazy.<\/strong> If it weren’t for that kind of thinking, our ancestors would have never climbed down out of the trees.<\/p>\n
