Dear Michael Sam:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Congratulations on having been recently drafted by the St. Louis Rams! Of course, you’ve gotten plenty of attention for this, which is kind of unusual for someone who got drafted 249th overall. The attention, of course, is because you have come out as gay.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I had a look at your birth chart (January 7, 1990, time unknown, Galveston Texas) and there’s some interesting astrology going on there with your both your natal chart and your transits. I imagine it takes a tremendous amount of courage for a professional football player to come out as gay, and I think you’ve certainly got that. Although, some would say that with Sun, Mercury, and Saturn conjunct in Capricorn\u2026 and Uranus and Neptune there too… it could either be “courage” or simply “you are too stubbornly yourself to pretend to be anything else.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

In either case, I believe congratulations are in order, and I think you already know that you have struck a blow to make the world a better place, despite the fact that probably all you really wanted to do was to play football.<\/p>\n

You already know this isn’t going to be easy, but as an astrologer, it’s my job to provide warning of potential difficulties ahead. Frankly Michael, the next few years will be uphill for you in a lot of ways. Transiting Pluto is conjunct your natal Neptune, and transiting Uranus is square it, and any illusions you may have had about this being easy are certainly going to be stripped away soon, if you haven’t already. Furthermore, the Uranus\u2013Pluto Square<\/a> is pounding away on that Neptune pretty hard, and will reach the exact peak of that transit at the end of this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Ellen DeGeneres came out, she too was having a difficult transit from Uranus to her Sun: the conjunction.<\/strong> But Pluto was sextile Uranus at the time, and that’s a much easier aspect to deal with.<\/p>\n

Personally, I’m a little bit surprised by the relative lack of negative response from certain quarters\u2026 you know who I’m talking about<\/em>\u2026 to your revelation. I like to think that this is because America has finally gotten around to the idea of leaving people alone to do their own thing, like Americans are supposed to do.<\/strong> But then I had a look at your transits, and I realize that in many ways there are much larger challenges coming for you in the next three or four years than what you have faced so far.<\/p>\n

I put a little more thought into this, and it makes perfect sense. You’re a gay NFL player. If you aren’t a success\u2026 which is entirely possible\u2026 people will pick on you for being gay. Of course if you draw attention to yourself by being successful, that will make you a target too. Football is injurious enough without the potential perils of being a role model on top of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As it stands at this point in time though, I think you should enjoy this (relative) break in the battle while it lasts. Those who are opposed to you simply because of who you are haven’t really made themselves felt yet. There will always be someone like Rush Limbaugh, whose recent reaction to the news of your success was pretty muddled and incoherent, even by his usual standards. Basically, Rush asserts that straight folks “may be 95, 98 percent of the population \u2014 they\u2019re under assault by the 2-5 percent that are homosexual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah, get used to that sort of thing, Michael. This is, of course, one more reason not to get your sports insights from Rush Limbaugh.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, personally, I would like to think that Mr. Limbaugh would be sensitive to people who are undergoing difficult Pluto transits. After all, it was when transiting Pluto was square Rush’s own Moon that he was detained at customs while returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic with four other men while in the possession of a bottle of Viagra prescribed in someone else’s name.<\/strong> But of course, that’s okay, because at the time he was between his third and fourth marriages\u2026 all to women.<\/p>\n
