Don&#8217;t hand the keys to your happiness over to people and forces that have no business controlling you. I&#8217;m not saying that what happened to you wasn&#8217;t tragic; I&#8217;m simply saying that allowing past events and present circumstances to dictate your attitude gives them a control over you that they don&#8217;t deserve.<\/p>\n<p>Happiness starts with a choice. Look at the prophet Jeremiah and the Old Testament book of Lamentations. An oft-overlooked book, Lamentations is simply a heart cry of pain by the prophet Jeremiah over the destruction of his beloved city of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. In the midst of this lament, Jeremiah wears his heart on his sleeve,<\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><em><span class=\"chapter-1\"><span id=\"en-NIV-20356\" class=\"text Lam-3-1\">I am the man who has seen affliction\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Lam-3-1\">by the rod of the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u2019s wrath.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-20357\" class=\"text Lam-3-2\">He has driven me away and made me walk<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Lam-3-2\">in darkness\u00a0rather than light;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-20358\" class=\"text Lam-3-3\">indeed, he has turned his hand against me\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Lam-3-3\">again and again, all day long.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness\u00a0and hardship. He pierced\u00a0my heart with arrows from his quiver. I became the laughingstock\u00a0of all my people; they mock me in song\u00a0all day long. He has filled me with bitter herbs and given me gall to drink.<\/em>\u00a0Lamentations 3:1-5, 13-15<\/p>\n<p class=\"line\">That&#8217;s just a snapshot. There&#8217;s five chapters of that, five chapters of Jeremiah bringing his lament of his tragic life to God. But in the middle of the book, Jeremiah makes a key pivot, and it&#8217;s the key to happiness in the midst of overwhelming circumstances.<\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\"><em><span id=\"en-NIV-20374\" class=\"text Lam-3-19\">I remember my affliction and my wandering,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Lam-3-19\">the bitterness\u00a0and the gall.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-20375\" class=\"text Lam-3-20\">I well remember them,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Lam-3-20\">and my soul is downcast\u00a0within me.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-20376\" class=\"text Lam-3-21\"><strong>Yet this I call to mind<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Lam-3-21\">and therefore I have hope:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Because of the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u2019s great love\u00a0we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. <strong>I say to myself<\/strong>, \u201cThe\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.\u201d<\/em> Lamentations 3:19-24<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\">In the midst of his tragic circumstances, Jeremiah chose to dwell on the goodness of God. When the lies of the enemy flooded his mind with the thought that all was lost, he literally spoke the truth of God&#8217;s goodness to himself. Jeremiah had every right to be downcast, but he chose hope. He chose happiness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"line\">No matter what situation you&#8217;re walking through, it probably doesn&#8217;t compare to the destruction of your nation and the genocide of your people. In the midst of that cataclysm, Jeremiah chose to hope in God. If he can do it, so can you.
