The ultra-orthodox Sikrikim say that they are disgusted by people licking ice cream in public &#8212; and that such behavior promotes promiscuity, much like dancing.<\/p>\n<p>Although there was no dancing going on at the Zisalek Ice Cream Parlor, there were other outrages, such as men and women using the same entrance &#8212; something the Sikrikim cannot tolerate, according to the British newspaper the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2050573\/Ultra-strict-Jewish-sect-trashes-ice-cream-parlour-claiming-licking-cones-public-promotes-promiscuity.html#ixzz1bAhB3KD8\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Mail.<\/a><\/em>\u00a0The sect is named in honor of Jewish rebels who 2,000 years ago rose up against the occupying Roman army and took vigilante action against suspected Jewish collaborators.<\/p>\n<p>Attempting to placate the Sikrikim, the owners of the ice cream parlor in Jerusalem&#8217;s Mea Shearim neighborhood had put up posters asking people not to consume the snacks in public and installed separate entrances for men and women.<\/p>\n<p>However, that was not enough, reports the <em>Mail. <\/em>The\u00a0Sikrikim broke in during the night, vandalizing the premises.\u00a0&#8220;They had a real ball with us,&#8221; owner Guy Ammar told the <em>Mail.<\/em> &#8220;But we were not deterred. Residents here told us not to give up and business is going well now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ultra-Orthodox Jews make up about 8 percent of Israel&#8217;s 7.7 million population. With an average of eight children per family, they are a fast-growing population, reports the<em> Mail:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Many live below the poverty line and tend keep to their own towns and neighborhoods.\u00a0Mea Shearim is small, less than half a square mile, and home to about 30,000 residents considered among the most tight-knit and reclusive of Israel&#8217;s ultra-Orthodox Jews.\u00a0Other stores in the neighborhood, where men wear traditional black garb and women bare little but their face, have had their windows broken, locks glued and foul-smelling liquid smeared on walls.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene Samuels, manager of the Or Hachaim bookshop said: &#8220;They also threw a bag of excrement inside and smashed our windows three times.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her\u00a0shop has been attacked more than 10 times since it opened a year and a half ago, she told the <em>Mail.<\/em> The latest assault was last week. She has\u00a0met with the Sikrikim several times.
