{"id":8597,"date":"2011-10-14T10:52:02","date_gmt":"2011-10-14T14:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/?p=8597"},"modified":"2011-10-14T12:14:56","modified_gmt":"2011-10-14T16:14:56","slug":"evangelical-catholic-chaplains-say-theyll-perform-no-same-sex-weddings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/news\/2011\/10\/evangelical-catholic-chaplains-say-theyll-perform-no-same-sex-weddings","title":{"rendered":"Evangelical, Catholic chaplains say they&#8217;ll perform no same-sex weddings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two large groups of the U.S. military&#8217;s chaplains say they will perform no same-sex weddings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A coalition representing more than 2,000 Evangelical Christian military chaplains says its members will not perform homosexual ceremonies,&#8221; reports Jeremy Kryn of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/more-than-2000-military-chaplains-say-no-to-homosexual-marriage\" target=\"_blank\">LifeSiteNews.<\/a> &#8220;The Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty announced October 5 that it is joining the Catholic Archdiocese for Military Services to say &#8216;no&#8217; to the September 30 Pentagon directive authorizing military chaplains to do homosexual marriages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance\u00a0told Kryn\u00a0that while the Pentagon acknowledges a chaplain\u2019s right not to participate in homosexual \u201cmarriage\u201d ceremonies, the new policy has placed the Pentagon \u201cin the midst of a deeply controversial issue during a time of ongoing war.\u201d In its announcement, the Pentagon said homosexual \u201cmarriage\u201d ceremonies could be held at military chapels across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Archdiocese for Military Services said no Catholic chaplains in the military will participate in such ceremonies, pointing to the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman.<\/p>\n<p>Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis, a senior fellow for national security at the Family Research Council told\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.onenewsnow.com\/Culture\/Default.aspx?id=1448392\" target=\"_blank\">OneNewsNow <\/a>that the Pentagon&#8217;s decision to allow military chaplains to perform same-sex weddings &#8212;
