There is a fear that some will follow Pakistan and Iran, becoming radicalized Islamic republics, governed by Muslim religious law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurkey is a democratic, secular and social state of law,&#8221; Erdo\u011fan recently said in a speech in Tunisia, which threw out its government during &#8220;Arab Spring&#8221; uprisings that have swept North Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A secular state has an equal distance to all religious groups, including Muslim, Christian, Jewish and atheist people,\u201d Erdo\u011fan said during his visit to Tunis, the Tunisian capital.\u00a0\u201cTunisia will prove to the whole world that Islam and democracy can co-exist. Turkey with its predominantly Muslim population has achieved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ghannouchi was skeptical, saying the two nations are too different: \u201cWhat is meant by secularism is different between the Arab world and Turkey. In the Arab world, secularism has been linked in recent decades with dictatorship and with oppression, whereas secularism in Turkey is linked to democracy and freedom of choice,\u201d Rachid Ghannouchi, the leader of Tunisia&#8217;s Ennahda Party, told the Turkish newspaper Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He advocates official Islamic law<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8409\" style=\"width: 469px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/10\/erdogan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8409\" title=\"erdogan\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/10\/erdogan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShari&#8217;a is not something that is alien or strange to our societies,\u201d Ghannouchi said, adding that some aspects of Islamic law were already enshrined in both Tunisian and Egyptian legal codes. \u201cWe don\u2019t see shari&#8217;a as intervening in people\u2019s private lives and to their freedom to wear what they want.
