Local youth ministers from a variety of denominations encourage their youngsters &#8212; kindergartners through high schoolers &#8212; to show up for school early and pray at the flagpole.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/09\/see-you-at-the-pole3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7941\" title=\"see you at the pole3\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/09\/see-you-at-the-pole3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a>Predictable controversies have occurred. Three protesters showed up at an elementary school in Pennsylvania with placards directed at the children reading &#8220;Don&#8217;t pray in my school, I won&#8217;t think in your church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year, teachers in Sumner County, Tennessee, were given official guidelines &#8212; which basically told them to stand back and let the kids speak to God without any adult intervention or structure, reported Jennifer Easton in the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/article\/20110926\/GALLATIN01\/309260023\/Student-prayer-event-has-strict-guidelines-teachers\" target=\"_blank\">Nashville Tennesseean:<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While hundreds of students across Sumner County will gather at their school\u2019s flagpole for prayer Wednesday morning for See You At The Pole Day, school officials have taken extra measures to ensure teachers, administrators and coaches do not publicly endorse religion.<\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of the global annual event that serves to encourage prayer for students, Sumner school officials recently distributed guidelines telling school staff if they choose to pray on campus, it must be done out of sight and earshot of students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a teacher or administrator participates in events such as See You At The Pole, it is possible for a student to confuse a teacher or administrator\u2019s personal speech with their official speech,\u201d the guidelines state.<\/p>\n<p>The new rules were a result of an American Civil Liberties Union suit that accuses the district of promoting Christianity. A jury trial is scheduled for June 2012. Teachers have come under new scrutiny, reported Easton:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>The policy change has created some frustration among coaches and administrators, said Jason Cline, area director of the Northern Middle Tennessee chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the coaches have been told so much about what they can\u2019t do, they\u2019re not sure about what they can do,\u201d Cline said.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0group of teenagers\u00a0in Burleson, Texas, is credited with the &#8220;See You at the Pole&#8221;\u00a0concept in 1990.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/09\/see-you-at-the-pole2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7942\" title=\"see you at the pole2\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/09\/see-you-at-the-pole2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>&#8220;They came seeking God and little did they know how powerfully He was about to move,&#8221; notes a press release from the youth ministers network.\u00a0&#8220;Compelled to pray, they drove to three different schools that night. Not knowing exactly what to do, they went to the school flagpoles and prayed for their friends, schools, and leaders.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221;\u00a0Those students had no idea how God would use their obedience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;God used what He did among those teenagers and others who were holding similar prayer meetings at their schools to birth a vision in the hearts of youth leaders across Texas. The vision was that students throughout Texas would follow these examples and meet at their school flagpoles to pray simultaneously. The challenge was named &#8216;See You at the Pole&#8217; and shared with 20,000 students in June 1990 at Reunion Arena in Dallas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On September 12, 1990, more than 45,000 teenagers met at school flagpoles in four different states to pray before the start of school. Reports came for days after the first event. On September 11, 1991, at 7:00 a.m., an estimated one million students gathered at school flagpoles all over the country.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;From Boston to Los Angeles,\u00a0 from North Dakota to the tip of Texas, students came together to pray,&#8221; reads the press release.\u00a0&#8220;Some sang, some read Scripture, but most importantly, they prayed. Like those first students, they prayed for their schools, for their friends, for their leaders, and for their country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/09\/see-you-at-the-pole1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7944\" title=\"see-you-at-the-pole\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/09\/see-you-at-the-pole1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a>This year, the event occurred in every state of the Union as well as in Canada, Korea, Japan, Turkey and the African nation of the\u00a0Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30,000 kids in Alabama gathered at various schools, reported Greg Garrison for the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.al.com\/spotnews\/2011\/09\/thousands_meet_to_pray_before.html\" target=\"_blank\">Birmingham News:<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With a heavy fog hanging in the air, about 300 Oak Mountain Middle School students huddled on the football field to pray this morning before school.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 30,000 Christian students gathered before school at more than 200 public schools across central Alabama in observance of &#8220;See You at the Pole&#8221; day. The &#8220;See You at the Pole&#8221; event, which began at a Texas school in 1990, usually lasts from 7:15 a.m. to 8 a.m. before students go to class. More than two million students are estimated to take part each year.<\/p>\n<p>The movement toward religious clubs meeting on campus and organizing prayer rallies before school gained steam after the 1984 Equal Access Act granted student-led religious clubs the same right to meet on campus as other clubs.
