Thousands of Sikhs will gather across Europe Sunday to proclaim their right to wear their faith’s required turbans — and to voice concerns with legal challenges to such headgear in some parts of Europe.<\/p>\n

The turban or dastaar<\/em>\u00a0is mandatory for devout Sikh men. They are not allowed to remove it even to wear safety headgear such as motorcycle helmets.<\/p>\n

Thousands of turban-wearing Sikhs are expected to gather in European capitals in a simultaneous gathering organized by the Sikh Channel, a Europe-wide TV Station on the SKY platform.<\/p>\n

Live broadcast on the Sikh Channel\u00a0the Turban Awareness Gatherings will take place\u00a0from Madrid, London, Rome and Brussels.<\/p>\n

Sikhs in Italy have\u00a0complained of\u00a0difficulties at some Italian airports of being asked to remove their turbans, with many Sikhs refusing to\u00a0do so\u00a0and, as a result,\u00a0missing their flights. Some Italian provinces require Sikhs to remove Turbans for driving licence photographs.\u00a0Thus, a number of\u00a0Sikhs have not applied for driving licenses to\u00a0avoid\u00a0what they consider the\u00a0humiliation of being photographed without their turbans.<\/p>\n

The British gathering\u00a0is expected to\u00a0occur at\u00a0noon outside of the\u00a0Houses of Parliament. In Rome, Sikhs will gather at the Piazza Montecitorion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
