{"id":75,"date":"2007-07-31T17:50:25","date_gmt":"2007-07-31T17:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/2007\/07\/evangelicals-try-to-correct-mi.php"},"modified":"2007-07-31T17:50:25","modified_gmt":"2007-07-31T17:50:25","slug":"evangelicals-try-to-correct-mi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/news\/2007\/07\/evangelicals-try-to-correct-mi","title":{"rendered":"Evangelicals Try to Correct `Misperception&#8217; on Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RNS<br \/>\nby Michelle Rindels<br \/>\nWashington &#8211; A broad coalition of evangelical leaders is<br \/>\nattempting to &#8220;correct a serious misperception&#8221; that all evangelicals<br \/>\noppose creating a Palestinian state.<br \/>\nLed by Ron Sider, a professor at the American Baptist-affiliated<br \/>\nPalmer Theological Seminary and head of Evangelicals for Social Action,<br \/>\nthe coalition sent a letter to President Bush expressing support for a<br \/>\nproposed two-state solution.<br \/>\n&#8220;The only way to bring the tragic cycle of violence to end,&#8221; reads<br \/>\nthe July 27 letter, &#8220;is for Israelis and Palestinians to negotiate a<br \/>\njust, lasting agreement that guarantees both sides viable, independent,<br \/>\nsecure states.&#8221;<br \/>\nHistorically, evangelicals have adopted a pro-Israel stance in<br \/>\ndefense of the biblical &#8220;chosen people.&#8221; The letter reflects a more<br \/>\nnuanced perspective on the conflict &#8212; one that affirms legitimate<br \/>\nproperty rights on both sides while also placing blame for violence on<br \/>\nboth sides.<br \/>\n&#8220;We know that blessing and loving people (including Jews and the<br \/>\npresent state of Israel) does not mean withholding criticism when it is<br \/>\nwarranted,&#8221; the letter said, suggesting that &#8220;the best way we can bless<br \/>\nIsrael&#8221; might be to &#8220;remember &#8230; the profound teaching on justice that<br \/>\nthe Hebrew prophets proclaimed so forcefully.&#8221;<br \/>\nThirty-four evangelical leaders signed the document, including a<br \/>\nformer president of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, current<br \/>\npresidents of Fuller Theological Seminary and Bethel University, the<br \/>\neditor of Christianity Today and the national director of Vineyard USA.<br \/>\nThe letter was released not long after a recent Washington<br \/>\nconvention hosted by John Hagee, a San Antonio megachurch pastor who<br \/>\nheads Christians United for Israel, a staunchly pro-Israel group.
