{"id":7433,"date":"2011-09-19T16:42:57","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T20:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/?p=7433"},"modified":"2011-09-19T16:43:03","modified_gmt":"2011-09-19T20:43:03","slug":"egypt-abruptly-bars-exports-of-palm-fronds-to-israel-frustrating-sukkot-festival-planners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/news\/2011\/09\/egypt-abruptly-bars-exports-of-palm-fronds-to-israel-frustrating-sukkot-festival-planners","title":{"rendered":"Egypt abruptly bars exports of palm fronds to Israel, frustrating Sukkot festival planners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Egypt has unexpectedly banned the export of closed palm fronds, just in time for Israel&#8217;s annual Sukkot festival, in which the fronds are a traditional feature.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian decision to ban the export\u00a0has forced\u00a0Israel to seek ways to make up the shortfall &#8212; shipping\u00a0fronds from as far away as Spain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the past, Israeli dealers imported between 600,000 and 700,000 fronds, the vast majority of which came from Egypt&#8217;s Sinai region,&#8221; reports Menahem Kahana for the French news agency AFP. &#8220;The closed fronds of the date palm are used by Jews during the Feast of Tabernacles &#8212; which begins on October 12 and lasts for seven days.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following the Egyptian ban,\u00a0Israel&#8217;s agriculture ministry &#8220;is encouraging local palm farmers to significantly increase the amount of fronds they will supply for the holiday,&#8221; according to a\u00a0statement from Israeli Agriculture Minister Orit Noked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Relations between Egypt and Israel, which have been bound by a peace treaty since 1979, entered a period of turbulence after the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak by a popular uprising in February,&#8221; noted Kahana:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Israeli embassy in Cairo was ransacked last weekend, forcing the evacuation of staff and the departure of the ambassador.
