A Canadian father was alarmed when his first grader brought home a school notice that included the\u00a0\u00a0Toronto District School Board 2011-12 daily planner’s recommendations for “days of significance.”<\/p>\n
Such days that the six-year-old’s family should remember, according to the calendar, included \u00a0Nov. 19\u2019s Transgender Day of Remembrance,\u00a0Dec. 1\u2019s World AIDS Day, Dec. 17\u2019s International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, Feb. 7\u2019s International Day of Zero-Tolerance on Female Genital Cutting\/Mutilation and Feb. 12\u2019s International Sexual and Reproductive Health Day.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just bizarre,\u201d said the outraged dad, who took the paper out of his son’s folder before the boy saw it. \u201cHe\u2019s six. I want him to enjoy being six.\u201d<\/p>\n
“What are those things doing in a young child\u2019s school planner?” asks Joe Warmington, writing for the Toronto Sun<\/em> newspaper. “This boy\u2019s parents may have to tackle these issues far earlier than they planned.”<\/p>\n \u201cThe school only goes to the fifth grade, so they are not going to be able to say it was in there for the older kids either,\u201d said the dad, who Warmington did not identify. \u201cI just don\u2019t get it because the kids in first grade can read.\u201d<\/p>\n
