The campus minister at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, is tired of “fake religion,” he says.<\/p>\n
Recently,\u00a0Johnny Moore, 28,\u00a0halted a song service at the late Jerry Falwell’s\u00a0Thomas Road Baptist Church.<\/p>\n
\u201cOK, OK, wait just a second,\u201d said Moore. \u201cDo you mean these words? This is the church. It\u2019s not just songs. It\u2019s asking myself, am I singing a lie to God?”<\/p>\n
For 2,000 years hypocrisy\u2019s been Christianity\u2019s biggest problem “and yet somehow we don\u2019t deal with it,\u201d he told Liz Barry of the Lynchburg News & Advance<\/em> newspaper.<\/p>\n He calls hypocrisy the \u201celephant in the room\u201d and chooses to confront it candidly in his first book, Honestly,<\/em> which hits bookstores this week.\u00a0 In it, he recounts\u00a0his own\u00a0doubt and disillusionment when Moore was a young teen and his parents were discussing divorce. Then it came out that the pastor counseling his parents was having an affair with another pastor\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n \u201cThat really kind of just ransacked my faith,\u201d Moore recalled. \u201cI\u2019m one of 80 million millennials in North America. I see that the number one issue with Christians growing up in a Christian culture in this new world that we live in, this technological world, is that they\u2019re just as religious, they\u2019re just as spiritual.<\/p>\n “But they\u2019re really disillusioned, really burned by church, really burned by Christian leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n
