{"id":6667,"date":"2011-08-30T13:12:59","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T17:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/?p=6667"},"modified":"2011-08-30T14:14:49","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T18:14:49","slug":"china-convicts-buddhist-monk-to-11-years-in-feiry-suicide-protest-for-tibet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/news\/2011\/08\/china-convicts-buddhist-monk-to-11-years-in-feiry-suicide-protest-for-tibet","title":{"rendered":"China sentences Buddhist monk to 11 years in feiry suicide protest for Tibet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A court in southwestern China on Monday convicted a Buddhist monk of murder and sentenced him to 11 years in prison following the death of a younger monk who set fire to himself to protest Chinese rule in Tibet.<\/p>\n<p>The court in Sichuan province convicted Drongdru, a monk from the Kirti monastery, of &#8220;intentional homicide&#8221; over the death of the monk in March, the official Xinhua news agency quoted a court statement as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Drongdru, 46, was convicted because he &#8220;hid the injured monk and prevented emergency treatment, causing the 16-year-old&#8217;s death due to belated treatment,&#8221; the court said.<\/p>\n<p>The monk who died, Rigzin Phuntsog, was a &#8220;disciple and nephew of Drongdru,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>The court said it planned to try two other Kirti monks, Tsering Tenzin and Tenchum, on Tuesday for &#8220;instigating and assisting in the self-immolation of fellow monk Rigzin Phuntsog,&#8221; reported M&amp;C News:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Drongdru pleaded guilty to murder, expressed regret and requested leniency.
