Kids come from all across Europe. The staff is Catholic, Lutheran and Evangelical. The focus is on praising God and studying the Bible.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6383\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6383\" title=\"taize1\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Campers come from all across Europe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;At a time when church attendance is falling in western Europe and religious leaders fret about their ability to attract young people, why are young believers flocking in such vast numbers to a monastery in rural Burgundy?&#8221; asks the\u00a0British newspaper, the <em>Independent.<\/em>\u00a0&#8220;What is it that this event offers the teen spirit?<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6387\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6387\" style=\"width: 346px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6387  \" title=\"taize2\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A small session at the camp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;So many young people were leaving the church \u2013 and here, people were coming,&#8221; says a camp official, a Catholic monk who is known as Brother David. &#8220;It&#8217;s important we support their search and give them a place where they really can go. It&#8217;s not to tell them what they should or should not do, it&#8217;s to let them have that time of meeting with themselves, with others, and with Christ.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Campers have been arriving at the camp since June. There, they pitch tents, strike up friendships, enjoy plenty of music, and they&#8217;ll continue to come until September.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6385\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6385 \" title=\"taize4\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A session in the sanctuary<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event is called Communaut\u00e9 de Taiz\u00e9, named after the small village of Taiz\u00e9 near the site.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting it are over 100 monks, who live together very simply, in a life devoted to prayer, singing and silence. Drawn from over 30 different countries, the community is ecumenical, with Catholics and Protestants worshipping together.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6386\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6386 \" title=\"taize3\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/08\/taize3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A worship session<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And, even more unexpectedly, since the end of the 50s, Taiz\u00e9 has been attracting young people in ever larger numbers, and from ever more far-flung destinations. Teenagers and young adults make the pilgrimage, usually for a week, joining the brothers in prayer three times a day, attending Bible groups and helping out with chores.
