A court in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has ordered attorneys\u00a0representing the local Catholic Bishops Council to read Hindu\u00a0scriptures\u00a0before a lawsuit can continue.<\/p>\n

The state’s government had ordered public schools to incorporate “Gita Sar”–\u00a0a summary\u00a0of the Hindu scriptures, the Baghavad Gita– into their curriculum, reports the Indian Express<\/em> newspaper.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0bishops\u00a0had filed suit asking the\u00a0state’s high court to\u00a0require that all religions be put into the curriculum — without\u00a0favoring a particular faith. They argue\u00a0that giving other religions equal prominence with Hinduism conforms to the Indian Constitution’s secular India.<\/p>\n

Last week, the court issued an order instructing plaintiff’s counsel to take two months to read the entire Baghavad Gita before arguing the case so that counsel can “clearly understand whether the Gita is a philosophy of life or is associated with any religion.”<\/p>\n
