{"id":5453,"date":"2011-08-04T12:33:31","date_gmt":"2011-08-04T16:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/?p=5453"},"modified":"2011-08-04T12:43:38","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T16:43:38","slug":"princeton-review-kids-wheaton-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/news\/2011\/08\/princeton-review-kids-wheaton-college","title":{"rendered":"Princeton Review: Kids won&#8217;t hear pro-gay lectures at Wheaton College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wheaton College \u00a0in Chicago&#8217;s west suburbs has been\u00a0ranked for the second time in three years as the least &#8220;LGBT-friendly college&#8221; in America, according to the <em>Princeton Review.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>LGBT means &#8220;lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wheaton also made the publication&#8217;s list of America&#8217;s &#8220;Best Colleges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The homosexuality advocacy site ChicagoPride.com reports that the <em>Princeton Review<\/em> bases its annual rankings &#8212; which measure a number of environmental factors at college campuses throughout the country on questionnaires distributed to 122,000 students throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>On its website, the <em>Review<\/em>\u00a0headlines &#8220;How to Find Gay-Friendly Colleges&#8221; and offers the following list of the most unfriendly colleges to the LBGT cause:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li>Wheaton College, Chicago<\/li>\n<li>Grove City College, Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<li>Brigham Young University, Salt Lake City<\/li>\n<li>Hampden-Sydney College, Virginia<\/li>\n<li>College of the Ozarks near\u00a0Branson, Missouri<\/li>\n<li>University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana<\/li>\n<li>Thomas Aquinas College, Santa Paula, California<\/li>\n<li>Boston College, Massachusetts<\/li>\n<li>University of Dallas<\/li>\n<li>Texas A&amp;M University<\/li>\n<li>Providence College, Rhode Island<\/li>\n<li>Southern Methodist University, Dallas<\/li>\n<li>Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama<\/li>\n<li>University of Rhode Island<\/li>\n<li>Catholic University of America, Washington, DC<\/li>\n<li>Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan<\/li>\n<li>Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA<\/li>\n<li>University of Wyoming<\/li>\n<li>University of Kentucky<\/li>\n<li>Fairfield University, Connecticut<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On its website, Wheaton College calls itself\u00a0is &#8220;an explicitly Christian, academically rigorous, fully residential liberal arts college and graduate school located in Wheaton, Illinois. Established in 1860, Wheaton is guided by its original mission to provide excellence in Christian higher education, and offers more than 40 undergraduate degrees in the liberal arts and sciences, and 14 graduate degrees in psychology and Biblical studies.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to making the Princeton Review&#8217;s &#8220;Best 373 Colleges&#8221; in America list for 2011, Wheaton is listed in a number of other college guides&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>The 2011 <em>Fiske Guide to Colleges<\/em> includes Wheaton College in its list of 45 Best Buy colleges and universities, based on academic quality in relation to the cost of attendance.<\/li>\n<li><em>Kiplinger<\/em>&#8216;s ranks Wheaton 22nd for 100 Best Values in Private Colleges. Kiplinger&#8217;s rankings measure academic quality and affordability, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total.<\/li>\n<li>The 2010 <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em> ranks Wheaton 56 out of more than 260 National Liberal Arts Colleges.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Insider&#8217;s Guide to the Colleges 2011<\/em> observes, \u201cWheaton College changes lives for those who seek its top-notch academics and community committed to the Christian faith.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Colleges that Change Lives<\/em> includes Wheaton in its select list of 40 schools.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Princeton Review&#8217;s Guide to 286 Green Colleges<\/em> included Wheaton as a school that has \u201cdemonstrated an exemplary commitment to sustainability.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> reports that the college issued the following statement in response to\u00a0being\u00a0included on the\u00a0&#8220;unfriendly to LBGT&#8221; list: &#8220;Our goal is to follow God&#8217;s truth, including what the Bible says about sexual ethics. \u2026 While some may interpret this stance as hostility to the LGBT community, our aim is to stand respectfully and graciously for biblical truth.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wheaton College \u00a0in Chicago&#8217;s west suburbs has been\u00a0ranked for the second time in three years as the least &#8220;LGBT-friendly college&#8221; in America, according to the Princeton Review.
