Thirty-five\u00a0years after a string of murders in which he\u00a0taunted investigators, the “Son of Sam” serial killer says he is “in anguish” over the killings and wishes he could take it back.<\/span><\/p>\n

David <\/span>Berkowitz, serving a\u00a0365-year sentence in prison for killing six women,\u00a0says he has undergone a religious transformation, becoming a born-again Christian. <\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview\u00a0on the cable news channel MSNBC’s website, he said: “I’d like to be remembered as a person who’s sorry for what happened and is doing everything in his power to try this … to make amends to society in any way possible.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He murdered\u00a0the women with no apparent motive, sending letters to police and newspapers stating: “I am the Son of Sam. I love to hunt, prowling the streets looking for fair game.”<\/p>\n

Shortly after his arrest in August 1977, Berkowitz confessed to\u00a0the\u00a0shootings in New York between 1976 and 1977.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0claimed that he was commanded to kill by a demon who possessed his neighbor’s dog.<\/p>\n

Berkowitz\u00a0later claimed\u00a0he was the shooter in only two incidents, personally killing three people and wounding a fourth. The other victims were killed, Berkowitz claimed, by members of a violent satanic cult of which he was a member.<\/p>\n

He remains the only person charged with or convicted of the shootings.<\/p>\n
